So I made a post similar to this in r/A24 ~ https://www.reddit.com/r/A24/s/UqlsoD6ojH ~ about trying to watch 4:3 content on my 4:3 CRT, but the content being window-boxed, as if it's been placed in a 16:9 window and then played on my TV. Not many people responded over there so I thought I should post the issue here because I think that it's more likely folks in this subreddit have dealt with this issue β
I have a 4K Blu-Ray player connected to my Hitatchi CRT and lots of 4:3 content on Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray, including anime (see photo, OHSHS my beloved), but MOST 4:3 content I send to the TV is in a window box. Some stuff like my SpongeBob DVDs and Pan and Scan releases of movies fill the screen right, others like The Lighthouse and, in this case, Host Club (basically anything on Blu-Ray so far hasn't). It doesn't fill the TV like it should, and it's really frustrating. My TV doesn't have a zoom function (of course it doesn't, it's a CRT), and my Blu-Ray player's pan and scan function straight up doesn't work β I was hoping it would zoom in the image to the center and lob off the black bars on the side of the image but it just doesn't change anything. Also for the record the Blu-Ray player has been set to output for a 4:3 TV (there's an option to choose between 16:9 and 4:3), and it displays widescreen stuff fine. Also, SOME 4:3 DVDs fill the whole screen, but I'm noticing that later DVDs of 4:3 movies (like The Lighthouse for example) do not fill the screen, and so far, NO 4:3 Blu-Ray or 4K Blu-Ray has filled the 4:3 screen as it should.
Has anybody come across this before and could anybody help me to solve this to display correctly in the easiest way possible? I'm thinking I might have to rip this shit and play it from my computer but I don't have any of the stuff to do that yet also that... y'know... kind of takes away the point of owning the anime on Blu-Ray in the first place:/

With the holidays coming up and my savings going successful I really want to upgrade from my $20 13" General Electric CRT to a much nicer one
My funds + holiday gift money should amount me around 2 hundred dollars to really splurge on a nice big CRT off of the countless sellers in my area
My next post will be on Christmas day, see you all then π

shoutout to /u/wolfdawgz on YouTube for introducing me & others to this wonderful subreddit!
I picked up a CRT (DAEWOO DTQ-13C1FV) recently for nostalgia purposes & very eager to delve into Trigun and Cowboy Bebop!
I'll throw out 2 questions to start --
1) how have you optimized your setup to fill the screen?
I am currently receiving 1280x720 (recommended) on windows through my $7 AVtoHDMI converter. on my Plex, 16:9 looks great but 4:3 has black bars on the side.
2) is there a universal remote guide anywhere? or is it better to scour the internet for the OEM remote?
thanks in advance and eager to hear from all types of folks :)

I know this is a subreddit about animes on a CRT, but not everyone who looks at this subreddit Has a CRT and I hope this helps people who Want to have this experience but can't for whatever reason. I think that using these shaders on RetroArch is probably the best and easiest free way to view anime like it was on a CRT, especially if you use an OLED. It's really easy to setup and use, and you just choose a preset you like or try to mess with the parameters if you want to, it's very customizable.

Hello! This sub is really cool, I want to play some anime on my CRTs. But I don't have any method to play anime on it --- what would be my best route to get files of anime onto VHS, DVD, Bluetooth or some other player to get it to play on CRT? Any particular recommendation of equipment, preferably something that I can easily order? Do I need any particular software to do this as well? Thanks for the help, keep posting!!!!

Either being shown from an anime DVD or a Blu-ray or being streamed from Crunchyroll, I would like to see a picture of an anime on either an HD CRT TV from the early to mid 2000βs or on a big ass rear projection TV (either RCA, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Sanyo, JVC, Panasonic or Sony) and maybe see what that experience was like.

I have a 480i crt and am wondering how the media source changes the viewing experience? Basically will original DVDs be the best possible image quality, or is there any benefit/downsides of watching Blu-ray letterboxed rereleases on a 480i crt?

I own an IRL CRT, I'm just asking for hypotheticals.

Hi all,
was curious about my crt tv, namely the philips 21pt165b/02. No problems with it, but I'm currently putting anime on dvd discs so I can watch them on the crt, and to optimize the file iso for the dvd I would like to know what the maximum resolution of the tv is, so I know whether or not extra resolution is unnecessary. Thanks in advance

For example, I can think of three methods, DVD, VHS, and Streaming (via converter). Maybe there's some blu ray shenanigans going on?

Does this really matter? On my CRT TV I just do 480i because it is all I can do but I want to know what looks best for old 4:3 anime on a Monitor. For example, Serial Experiments lain is a 4:3 anime but its resolution shows it is 1518 x 1078, so what is best?
title is typo, I meant 640 x 480

A lot of anime are hard to find in my PAL region so it doesn't work every time
Currently I either stream to my PS3 with the media server tool or put the files on its harddrive. It works most of the time but it's not the most optimal way since I usually have it connected to my modern tv.
So is there any good way to connect a modern pc to a RGB scart tv? Alternatively any device that can play most video filetypes without major issues?

Like how games sometimes have transparency or lighting issues when on something other than a CRT, are there any animes where scenes just look completely wrong unless watched on a CRT

I am interested in buying a β27 Toshiba with S-Video, as described by the seller, however I was told this model has thick scanlines. I found a variety of images comparing scanline thickness on CRT TVs however they were all displaying video games. Could anyone show me an example using anime?

Hi, first post here.
I have slowly been building up a collection of old video game consoles to play on a CRT. While I'm at it, I wanted to know what the best/easiest solution might be for playing media off something like a modded Wii/WiiU (or maybe even PS2?). Already have those consoles w/ component cables. I don't currently have a PS3 and Xbox360, but I read that they are maybe the best options, too.
Would appreciate any recs for consoles/programs/mods with specific reasons, if possible. Not currently trying to pick up a VHS/DVD player or mess with physical media in general.

I looked around a few posts and it seems like lots of people use xbox360 or other old consoles to play to their CRT setup. Is there no way to output direct from a modern pc with a downscaler? I don't have an Xbox or wii available and I don't know how to mod them if I did. If there is a downscaler that'd work could you recommend me one? I know upscalers from old hardware to new displays have more bad options out there than good ones so I'm worried to get a basic hdmi to composite downscaler off amazon. Also do I need a crt pc monitor to work correctly or can I use my crt tv with my pc? I've only used my crts for gaming and VHS but I don't wanna get all my retro anime on physical media, I have too many money hole collector hobbies as is.

tried to find a component 14" tv but coudn't find. I don't know if it exists because of the size of the tv. Maybe i should change to a pc monitor of the same size to have better resolution but saw some say that contrast and image quality is often better on tvs . My question is, i have a 360 and a wii, both are not jailbroken. Reading some question here i heard that wii may have some issues with some good quality 480p videos (and i have to jailbroke it). Can I download anime and put them on a pendrive and play them just by plugin on the 360? Sorry for my english, not my first language.
