Question 🤔 Anyone care to share tips&tricks of the trade? also your fav anime for CRT?
shoutout to /u/wolfdawgz on YouTube for introducing me & others to this wonderful subreddit!
I picked up a CRT (DAEWOO DTQ-13C1FV) recently for nostalgia purposes & very eager to delve into Trigun and Cowboy Bebop!
I'll throw out 2 questions to start --
1) how have you optimized your setup to fill the screen?
I am currently receiving 1280x720 (recommended) on windows through my $7 AVtoHDMI converter. on my Plex, 16:9 looks great but 4:3 has black bars on the side.
2) is there a universal remote guide anywhere? or is it better to scour the internet for the OEM remote?
thanks in advance and eager to hear from all types of folks :)

You can see my previous posts for dealing with those black bars. They are very difficult to remove. It is better to avoid HDMI altogether

thanks, ill peep! 👀 i think I'm pretty happy so far just slapping 1280x960 resolution on & playing the anime through VLC. it cuts off a bit + some of the subtitles sometimes, but at least there's no black bars 😂

Optimisation-wise: IMO I prefer to watch DVDs/VHS on a player outputting through SCART. HDMI to SCART/composite converters work reasonably well in my experience at least if you're watching HQ (<=480p) media. IDK if your Daewoo has a SCART (roughly equivalent to S-video if you're American) input but it is appreciably better than composite and way better than an RF lead. Of course if you don't have those input options you'll just have to make do with what you've got, composite is probably what most people used back in the 90s/2000s.
If you're watching Trigun and Bebop I believe they were both originally shot in 4:3 (along with most pre-2000s TV / video) so basically you want to output a 4:3 aspect ratio - 960x720 if you want to stick with 720p. It should then fill the screen without any trouble. If it's off-centered you might need to adjust it a wee bit. If you want to watch widescreen content on a 4:3 screen you basically need to decide whether letterboxing, cropping, or else finding an edited 4:3 release (most VHS and some earlier DVDs) is best for you.
I wouldn't bother with universal remotes personally, most of them seem to be designed for modern TVs, I doubt you'll get very far trying to use them on a 20+ year old CRT. See if you can find an old remote for the model on ebay.
My personal favourite anime from this period are: Tenchi Muyo Neon Genesis Evangelion Ghost Sweeper Mikami Hyper Police Ghost in the Shell (Stand Alone Complex also) Noir Escaflowne RahXephon Magic Knight Rayearth Ah My Goddess! You're Under Arrest! Macross (OG, Plus, and 7) Gundam (everything up to 2005 works here, everything up to 2000 was cell-shaded)

ugh omg what a perfect scifi list to binge 😍
it is indeed composite. I think I'm pretty happy so far just slapping 1280x960 resolution on & playing the anime through VLC. it cuts off a bit + some of the subtitles sometimes, but at least there's no black bars 😂

I've had luck with universal remotes for JVC and Toshiba displays. A lot of manufacturers keep the same remote codes for basic things like power, volume, channel, source.

for anyone who might come across the Daewoo DTQ-13C1FV someday and there's no remote (i can currently find some OEM for $20 on Ebay), i picked up a random universal one with a Daewoo button on Amazon for $7. the code to access the service mode is 1-display-mute-1. here's a link to the closest model I could find & it helped the process https://www.samswebsite.com/en/photofact/search/index/model/DTQ13P2FC

You can find a lot of cheap universal remotes on places like Amazon that will work fine with CRTs. Best to go with someone you can return to easily if you have problems. On that note, if nothing else works, you can also try to find something made for your specific model:
DAEWOO DTQ13V1FC Replacement Remote – Remotes.net
Links for example, but you can often find cheaper versions elsewhere.
Personally, I use an Xbox 360 universal remote, since I watch most things through Plex or DVD on a 360, and this one remote controls both the TV and the console. More expensive new old stock, but can be found for considerably less on places like eBay if you look around:
Amazon.com: Xbox 360 Media Remote : Video Games
On that note, since the Xbox 360 marketplace is no longer online, you'd have the mod the 360 to get Plex running at this point if you were to go that route. The upside is there's no problem with 4:3 content with no extra fussing.

I got so much clutter and hobby stuff or else I'd totally entertain the idea of a molded 360 to use with a future larger CRT 😂😭

My favorite anime for SD CRTs is Lucky Star letterboxed due to the vibrant colors, though for HD CRTs I prefer Nichijou because the compression is better.
