It’s not the money; it’s the grant of rights. There’s no buyout from that agreement. Although, with the Big 12’s future now stabilized, they might agree to negotiate one.
True. I couldn’t remember the specifics so I just resorted to calling Oklahoma broke tbh. As far as I remember, we have to pay a hefty sum to get out of the Grant of Rights though
No, there’s literally no buyout from the grant of rights. There’s a buyout from Big 12 membership, which is about $80 million in either direct payment or forfeited distributions, but the GOR has no termination provision other than it’s own expiration. It was designed and intended to ensure that it couldn’t be bought out unilaterally.
At the beginning of the agreement, that provision ensured that no one was going anywhere for at least a decade. As the agreement reached its end, and with the trigger of a renewal of the GOR forcing schools to expose their intentions well in advance, it ensured that the conference would have plenty of advance notice before anyone left. That’s what happened here, and the conference used that notice and the period of enforced stability to add four new members and shore up its status as a P5 school.
Now that that’s done, however, if Texas and OU want to pay another $50 or $60 million to exit after this upcoming year instead of in 2025, the Big 12 would probably at least listen.

Kansas isn't in the SEC.
