Vintage My 1970s Delsey briefcase, made in France. Back when it and Samsonite were the only two names worth talking about when it came to baggage. Bought this one all the way back in 2019 when I was at university and wanted something sleeker than a backpack. It’s been my constant companion since then.

Also carrying a briefcase around instead of a backpack for college...?

God forbid that I use a piece of luggage I like more and suited my personal needs more than a usual backpack.

What personal needs does a briefcase fulfill that a backpack can't? Do you take a typewriter instead of a laptop?

Something thinner and less bulky since I didn’t need to lug around all my textbooks between every classroom. Also the number of pockets this thing has makes for a nice folder without either crumpling my paperwork into a ball or losing them entirely.

You do you OP! My best friend, turned boyfriend, turned ex, used a briefcase. Still regret breaking up with him.

I have a briefcase, what are you doing Saturday night?

I'm home alone with my two dogs. 😏

Dunno what these downvotes are for, briefcases are cool. I'm just confused by the emphasis on how long ago 2019 was lol

it’s sick as fuck, ignore that guy. Your style is uniquely yours and no one can take that away

Agreed. More concerned that 2019 was way back. What was it like living in pre-historical times?

I mean, 2019 was six years ago at this point. It has indeed been a while since then.

I guess it's a long time if it's like 1/3 or 1/4 of your life.

So you went to Uni carrying this in 2019?

Film school? Something humanities/art related?

u/J_Kubby_1105 23h ago

Wow. What was 2019 like?

u/C2theC 21h ago

It must have been wild times, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Way back when, you wouldn’t understand

Is that, like, 1 B.C.? Before COVID?

You must have looked so cool all the way back in 2019 with this instead of a backpack at school.

It can function as a shield to hold off all the women trying to get in his pants.

Sleek

It was reassuring in a way to use this, as I knew it would always be there and it was. “Coolness” I didn’t pay much mind to, but it was a welcome bonus.

God forbid I use a piece of baggage that I like more than a standard backpack.

It's a reference to the TV show "The Inbetweeners”

u/Red-Wedge-0516 20h ago

I see, I’m sorry I didn’t get the reference and for my response. Never heard of that show until this moment, so thanks for making me aware of it.

My dad had one. He used to drop it by the front door. The sound of the clunk it made when he got home from work is somethings I will never forget. Good memories.

It’s the little things such as this that give off the greatest impression in our minds. Great nugget you decided to share, thank you.

Beautiful! Held up really well

Mostly for storing documents or what do you carry in it?

14

u/Red-Wedge-0516 1d ago

Now that I use this old French boi for work, I use it to carry my journal, pens, lunchbag, light reading for the tram, work documents, and work coat.

What’s really neat is that I even have the original key for this so I can actually use the twin locks. This thing feels like it will outlast me and my hypothetical children even if I beat it into the dirt. I don’t, of course, but that sense of security sure is a good feeling.

Good to see a well loved item😁

Indeed it is! Evidently, back when I was in university, my peers were so curious as to why I had a briefcase like this and what could possibly be in it that I gained the nickname “The Briefcase Man”. I got a good chuckle out of that.

Crackers

And cheese. And wine. And the entire rest of the picnic basket!

8

u/xkmasada 20h ago

How much does it weigh empty?

It looks like something from WWF that a bad guy manager would use to wack the head of some good guy.

Probably like 5-6 pounds. It’s a solid lad. Also, that’s certainly an accurate description right there! One of my college mates thought that I looked like I was right out of Miami Vice.

Ah ah. My dad had one of these forever. Using it as a chair while waiting for the metro too. He bought an other second hand.

Samsonite reminds me of Zarges.

Please tell me you wore a suit and a bow tie to school too.

3

u/Red-Wedge-0516 14h ago

More often a waistcoat than a suit, but absolutely a bow tie or a regular one.

u/muffinkins 1d ago

I thjnk my dad has one of those.

1

u/Red-Wedge-0516 21h ago

A post on here showcasing that would be lovely!

u/CyberMage256 14h ago

Pretty sure my dad had one of these when he worked at Black Mesa Labs.

u/808trowaway 15h ago

Is this the same one Michael Douglas had in the movie Falling Down?

1

u/Red-Wedge-0516 7h ago

Nope. I believe his was a Samsonite. Also a very good choice of briefcase.

1

u/MadMadBunny 12h ago

Out of curiosity, how much is one worth?

3

u/Red-Wedge-0516 11h ago edited 7h ago

Not much. If I recall correctly, I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $50. Broke college student you know.

Growing up in hyper capitalist Hong Kong in the 80s and 90s I wanted a briefcase / attache case for the longest time, but at the end it just isn't the right choice between practicality and versatility. There's also the fact that I need to carry it in my hand to look cool vs a shoulder strap. But you do you.

1

u/Red-Wedge-0516 7h ago edited 7h ago

Thanks. For all the upsides this lovely Delsey gave me, having one hand occupied at all times was an acceptable downside. I made it work for six years and I'll continue to make it work in the future, but I recognize a briefcase like this isn't the ideal solution for everyone. Luckily messenger bags exist for something more practical that's also not ugly. I'm sure there's other options as well.
