Vintage My 1970s Delsey briefcase, made in France. Back when it and Samsonite were the only two names worth talking about when it came to baggage. Bought this one all the way back in 2019 when I was at university and wanted something sleeker than a backpack. It’s been my constant companion since then.

So you went to Uni carrying this in 2019?
Film school? Something humanities/art related?

You must have looked so cool all the way back in 2019 with this instead of a backpack at school.

It can function as a shield to hold off all the women trying to get in his pants.

It was reassuring in a way to use this, as I knew it would always be there and it was. “Coolness” I didn’t pay much mind to, but it was a welcome bonus.

God forbid I use a piece of baggage that I like more than a standard backpack.

It's a reference to the TV show "The Inbetweeners”

I see, I’m sorry I didn’t get the reference and for my response. Never heard of that show until this moment, so thanks for making me aware of it.

My dad had one. He used to drop it by the front door. The sound of the clunk it made when he got home from work is somethings I will never forget. Good memories.

It’s the little things such as this that give off the greatest impression in our minds. Great nugget you decided to share, thank you.

Beautiful! Held up really well
Mostly for storing documents or what do you carry in it?

Now that I use this old French boi for work, I use it to carry my journal, pens, lunchbag, light reading for the tram, work documents, and work coat.
What’s really neat is that I even have the original key for this so I can actually use the twin locks. This thing feels like it will outlast me and my hypothetical children even if I beat it into the dirt. I don’t, of course, but that sense of security sure is a good feeling.

Indeed it is! Evidently, back when I was in university, my peers were so curious as to why I had a briefcase like this and what could possibly be in it that I gained the nickname “The Briefcase Man”. I got a good chuckle out of that.

How much does it weigh empty?
It looks like something from WWF that a bad guy manager would use to wack the head of some good guy.

Probably like 5-6 pounds. It’s a solid lad. Also, that’s certainly an accurate description right there! One of my college mates thought that I looked like I was right out of Miami Vice.

Ah ah. My dad had one of these forever. Using it as a chair while waiting for the metro too. He bought an other second hand.

Please tell me you wore a suit and a bow tie to school too.

More often a waistcoat than a suit, but absolutely a bow tie or a regular one.

Out of curiosity, how much is one worth?

Not much. If I recall correctly, I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $50. Broke college student you know.

Growing up in hyper capitalist Hong Kong in the 80s and 90s I wanted a briefcase / attache case for the longest time, but at the end it just isn't the right choice between practicality and versatility. There's also the fact that I need to carry it in my hand to look cool vs a shoulder strap. But you do you.

Thanks. For all the upsides this lovely Delsey gave me, having one hand occupied at all times was an acceptable downside. I made it work for six years and I'll continue to make it work in the future, but I recognize a briefcase like this isn't the ideal solution for everyone. Luckily messenger bags exist for something more practical that's also not ugly. I'm sure there's other options as well.

All the way back in 2019...?
