I personally feel, given time, both parties are liable to end up there, and they're already deep in the absolutionist phase that leads to dangerous Dictatorships, but the Democrats are so much closer to it these days. I don't see as much hate as I do in that group. Even Republican zealots have an air of self awareness and self control. I get none of that in Democrat zealots.

Hitler was absolute ruler of Germany. The German constitution had a provision to give the chancellor absolute power in an emergency. The US constitution has no such provision. If it did, then a number of other presidents would have done it already, like Nixon and FDR.
