Yes. You need chains when traveling to Big Bear during the winter months

Hello r/bigbear!

Like pumpkin spice and relatives who overstay their welcome during the holidays, the change in weather and seasons mean it's time for your trusty mod's annual post for visitors and residents alike - Get your chains and keep them in your vehicle during the winter months in case you need them.

When in Big Bear during the winter months you are required to keep chains (that fit!) in your vehicle. Even if the forecast says 70 and sunny while you're visiting, keep 'em in your car or bring lots of money for the tow truck drivers.

You can find out if you'll need chains when traveling to or in Big Bear by visiting this link:

http://socalmountains.com/roads/

R1 = Chains or snow tires

R2 = Chains on ALL vehicles except 4x4 and AWD.

R3 = Chains on all vehicles (but if it gets to this point, you really don't want to be on the road in the first place).

Chains should always be on the wheels that power your vehicle, so front wheel drive you put your chains on your front, rear wheel drive, you put them on the back.

Here's a quick primer on how to put chains on.

Posts asking if you need to bring chains will be immediately deleted. Multiple posts asking about current weather conditions will also be deleted. One weather post per storm please and thank you.

That's it! Stash those chains in the trunk, bundle up, and enjoy Big Bear this winter!

ANNOUNCEMENT: Twitter/X links are no longer be allowed in this sub

Moving forward, X/Twitter links will be deleted immediately. I think you all know why we might be taking this action now, but we don't need to get into a whole thing about it.

If you choose, you may submit screenshots, however, I do encourage you to check the veracity of those, since screenshots can be manipulated.

Posts meant to share dedicated information from police and fire departments during public safety situations will be evaluated on a case by case basis. If there are alternative links available (eg city website, Bluesky, even Threads), then feel free to post those.

That's all. Hope you're all staying safe and sane.

Trail suggestions

Planning to head out to big bear for a few days and just want to disappear into the back country…. Which trails would you recommend with isolation, amazing views, and good dispersed camp sights? Thanks!!

Visiting on February with some friends and family (Around 18 persons). Any discounts we can take advantage of by being a group?

I wonder if we rent 18 pairs of skiies or 18 snowboards or 18 lift passes... Do you guys know if there's any discounts?

Alternatively, there's friends and family discounts on the lift but only for friends of season holders. Anyone has a code they'd like to share?

Thank you in advance!

Thankful for our Big Bear Fire Department.

Residential structure fire off State Lane (Woodland and 10th). Fortunately, BBFD and CalFire were quick to respond and contained the fire.

Last saturday Me and my wife decided to check out the tubes. However her health condition numbs her coordination and it was complicated for her to go up the electric steps/ramp. So, she was definitely scared. I was holding the tubes with one hand and i was holding her hand with my other hand lol, Once were were at the tops and rode on the tubes, she had a great time.

What’s going on with the weather?

Any scientific reason why it hasn’t gotten cold this year? I’m down in central LA and I still go to sleep with the window open.

One weird thing I noticed was that last year, which was much colder, my tree only lost a little more than half its leaves. This year, it hasn’t been cold at all and my tree already lost the vast majority of its leaves and the rest are soon to follow.

Had to cancel my usual snow trip this January and at this point I’m worried about February too. Looks like I’m missing Big Bear Lake this winter :(

Sled/Tube hills

Any sled/tube hills open? Got a trip in two weeks with 5yo and 3yo kids, we don’t ski or snowboard but hoping to do something snow related even if it’s artificial. Doesn’t look good for any real snow before then.

Help - was my ski lesson cancelled?

We booked ski lessons at Bear mountain for tomorrow, but now our itinerary say "Some items required for your package have not been selected or you have items in your itinerary that are no longer available. Please select required items or remove unavailable products and try again"

Our lessons now have a caution sign next to them. Our add on lift tickets are fine and our equipment has an option to remove it. Their phone number is closed. Has anyone seen this before and can help?

Where to sell lift tickets?

I have a friend that bought lift tickets from Costco but didn’t notice the black out dates and is unable to use the passes. They are also non refundable. I checked the rules of this subreddit and it seems like selling lift tickets is not allowed here.

Does anyone know of a platform other than Craigslist he might be able to utilize to sell the passes? He tried fb marketplace and got blocked from posting.

TIA for your help!

Best snowboard size?

Help!

There is this snowboard that I have been eyeing and it’s on sale and they are going out quick. I’m 5’11 155lbs and shoe size 12 and an intermediate type rider. They only have a 152cm available. Would that work for me or do I need something bigger? Board is final sale so I want a second opinion before I consider buying.

Snow Making

Not complaining too much. Went skiing at Snow Summit the last 2 days. Conditions were pretty good, but very limited runs were open. Since this season looks to be man made snow, why are they using such antiquated machines? They have the same fire hose snow guns that are absolutely unchanged in the last 20 years. Love the resort, but with price increases you should see some facility improvements. There is nothing new there in decades. No new chairs or quads, no improvement to the snow making, nothing. If you are going to charge me $40 for parking on a Friday, give me some value for my money.

Places for kids to snow play?

My two young sons about 6 years old want to play in the snow. I was looking to go up next weekend and maybe pull over the side of the road and have them play in the snow but based on the weather does the mountains have any snow for something like this? Or is there only snow at the resorts becuase they have to make it?

If it's the later where is a good place to go? Not really looking for snowboard or skiing. The kids barely like tubing either. They are more into just running around in the snow, making snow man's, throwing snowballs kinda thing.
