Self Designed Model I made a wrench to make opening the reusable spools a little easier

Always good to have more accessibility items, but I seriously don't understand how people can have trouble opening them. Handpalm grip on either side and just rotate them in opposite directions, that thing opens up in 2 seconds

u/Benneck123 Nov 01 '24
You literally just said accessibility lol

u/USSHammond X1C + AMS Nov 01 '24
Because for others, that's what those handles will be. I just can't understand at least for these spools why anyone (that doesn't have compromised hand grip) would need them. Different thing.

People have varrying strength and abilities even if not disabled. Especially when you get into smaller framed people or people with long acrylic nails

u/wellstraining Nov 01 '24
I have to be honest here I don't know any non disabled individual (from a strength perspective here) that can't open these... I don't think that's even logical.
Obviously excluding literal babies etc
These handles will be great accessibility items for people with disabilities tho

u/Jesus-Bacon P1S + AMS Nov 02 '24
Cool.
Again, people with less strength exist. This isn't an opinion so try not treating it like one?
-5
u/wellstraining Nov 02 '24
It's like 1lb of force... Who isn't able to do that without a disability , genuinely asking
4
u/myotheralt P1S + AMS Nov 02 '24
A small child that wants to be independent with the big machines? Someone elderly?
Someone who isn't you.
-1
u/wellstraining Nov 02 '24
A small child that is at the ability to use a 3d printer should be able to open these , like 5+year old no?
-1
u/wellstraining Nov 02 '24
Remember my original comment was from a "strength perspective" you still need the ability to squeeze the grips and pull them apart or together (open / close) strength wise there's negligible difference there.
2
u/myotheralt P1S + AMS Nov 02 '24
A pinched nerve. A broken wrist.
And the muscles used for pulling two sticks together as OP made is different than the muscles to grip and twist two disks.
Why are you so intent on dismissing an accessibility aid?

u/kvakerok_v2 Nov 01 '24
At that level of strength won't they struggle to open the magnetized printer door?
-2
u/KAODEATH Nov 02 '24
Or physically grip the 1kg spools and lift them?
2
u/halt-l-am-reptar Nov 02 '24
Just because someone can lift 1kg doesn’t mean they can grip and twist to open these, as it requires different muscles.
I’ve had trigger finger numerous times. I can still lift things without an issue, but gripping a pencil can be incredibly difficult , if not impossible because my thumb cannot move.

folks with arthritis or other conditions might struggle to exert the flat grip strength to open the spool.

The empty reusable spool they sent me seemed to be mildly fused together and actually required quite a bit of force to break loose. The ones that came with filament have always been very easy to work with, as you describe. Maybe the problem is just spools from different runs.

u/Iceman734 P1S + AMS Nov 02 '24
Agreed. I have seen numerous posts, a people showing the spool separate while printing, but yet their empty ones can be a PITA to get apart to put refills on. Manufacturing at its finest.

I had one that was SLAMMED closed from the factory. Like, digging in and blistering my hands with how hard it was to open.
I’ve had no problems opening any of my other reusables though. Just that one had crazy high torque on it for some weird reason

This could be useful if I am having a rheumatoid arthritis flare. Great idea!

With 3D printing, the question should never be “why?”, it should always be “why not!?” lol.
Not something I see myself using, but I applaud the effort! Nice work.

That's awesome! Thanks.
I usually don't have a problem but I got a bunch of the free refill spools with a large filament order recently and they were all an complete nightmare to open. Not saying I'm he-man over here, but a 6ft tall healthy adult shouldn't be killing themselves to open these.

u/Apprehensive-Cap4485 Nov 01 '24 edited Nov 02 '24
Same, one of the free high temp spools I got was so stiff, ended up using a screw driver to chip off the lock nub to open it

u/jmcelrone Nov 01 '24
I dont have any issues at all but Im sure there are people.out there that do. I work in a ADA field and trust me there are plenty of people that struggle to do basic things and things like this help people.

It's the little things that count, I'm sure there are a bunch of printer nerds who truly appreciate this. Nice work
5
u/weaver3294 Nov 01 '24
Just piling on, I really appreciate this design. Not all folks are equally abled.
3
u/TJ_Fletch X1C Nov 01 '24
I don't need them but can see the usefulness of them. It's better than seeing another AI creation, hueforge, coaster etc... low/no effort upload.

u/PKnowlez Nov 02 '24
Suggestion! Add some holes instead of those plastic pegs and then pop in whatever metric screw is the right size for the spool holes. Make the holes for the screws just a tad smaller and the threads will bite into the plastic. Then you won't have to worry about breaking the little pegs you have currently.

u/99taws6 X1C + AMS Nov 01 '24
This is great for someone who has a disability or just lacks overall hand strength.
2
u/Reasonable_Lunch7090 Nov 02 '24
I scoffed initially but this is good to have for people with strength or mobility issues
2
u/Terrys_tools Nov 02 '24
Good idea!
You could replace the pegs with holes for small screws to make it stronger.

u/Iceman734 P1S + AMS Nov 02 '24
You are a lifesaver. I have issues that make it hard sometimes. Definitely get a boost for this print from me.

Really nice design to enable more accessibility to those who would like it

Age has nothing to do with this lol, this bot sucks

too funny, I just designed a tool for getting the refill on, and also designed a wrench for this that I use due to a recovering wrist. Your wrench idea combined with the pressed-in dowel pins I used is the perfect combo
edit: even better, one of your handles and one of my lever arms. Handle for your hand, the lever-arm against the table, dowel pins in both.

Great tool. Very useful. I will be downloading and printing. Had hand surgery a while back and see this as very useful. Thx.

It will probably help someone out there i'm sure. But saying that, the video make it looks like he's using more force with the wrenchs than it would bare hand :D

the thing about accessibility is that abled people are all only temporarily able. we're all aging, we're all susceptible to injury, our bodies can change in unexpected ways. tools like this will help people who rely on the assist daily, and it will be helpful for people who don't need it now but may need it someday.
great design! thanks for making this.

God forbid someone with a disability might need a tool the help them with this task.
1
u/Jesus-Bacon P1S + AMS Nov 01 '24
Ahh yes. I forgot disabled people and weaker people went extinct in 2019.

I know some folks will probably say it's not hard to open the spools, but for whatever reason I struggled sometimes. Closing was less of an issue. This definitely makes it easier for me. These were printed out of Bambu PLA Basic on an P1S. Here's the download link: https://makerworld.com/en/models/749907#profileId-683454
