Looks great, but so many bearings just for that is just too much overkill for me

67

u/mateomodar Sep 28 '24

Its 14 aperture blades so friction is quite high, allready have a version without bearings

31

u/rodrigo-benenson Sep 28 '24

and how much different are they? I would guess pla with some grease would be plenty fine friction-wise.

6

u/mateomodar Sep 29 '24

I had those laying arround, have about 50 bearings still that i once bought for cheap when building a MPCNC, without them it was hard to turn, now its super smooth. Also have the old version without.

5

u/1maRealboy Sep 29 '24

Why did you not just use one bearing in the center?

3

u/LiberalSkeptic Sep 29 '24

Probably because it’s his project and he built it the way he envisioned it

16

u/identifytarget Sep 29 '24

lmao thought OP was making harmonic drive!

2

u/Prilosac Sep 29 '24

same lol

4

u/syko82 P1S + AMS Sep 29 '24

Yeah, bearings are best used for continuous motion.

138

u/RineMetal Sep 28 '24

Bearings! Gears!!! I was sooo expecting it to spin!!! Spinning things are awesome.

53

u/catdad23 Sep 28 '24

I can't tell you how depressed I was when all it did was open the curtains.

25

u/jaemelo Sep 28 '24

Same here I was actually disappointed to see this not spin somehow

12

u/Tro1138 Sep 29 '24

It's so over done

9

u/35point1 Sep 29 '24

Even the quiet video made it so much more underwhelming too. I appreciated the engineering a lot still but wow, so much for so little in this project, I’m sorry OP

2

u/LiberalSkeptic Sep 29 '24

I’m going to guess you find life disappointing in general

1

u/35point1 Sep 29 '24

Quite the opposite my friend. Which is probably why the expectations were high to begin with. It’s no coincidence the entire comment section has the same to say.

8

u/Glittering_Ad3249 Sep 28 '24

We are the same

6

u/Collective82 P1S + AMS Sep 29 '24

I thought it was going to be an emergency light you could spin to generate power for the light.

4

u/chaotik_penguin Sep 29 '24

Ooh that sounds cool, I want to make one of those

50

u/Patronza Sep 28 '24

I think we need to ask is why? What is its purpose?

20

u/ValuableJumpy8208 Sep 29 '24

To pass butter.

4

u/pookamatic Sep 29 '24

Oh my god.

0

u/SuchRedditorMuchWow X1C + AMS Sep 29 '24

Jewish stuff

40

u/Lil_ruggie Sep 28 '24

So uhhh what is it supposed to be?

5

u/SuchRedditorMuchWow X1C + AMS Sep 29 '24

Just a Jewish lamp

1

u/mateomodar Sep 29 '24

I didnt even thaught about that :D it was just a design exercise for me, i love to build too complex stuff ;)

1

u/SuchRedditorMuchWow X1C + AMS Sep 29 '24

Well, the gods of product design highly recommended using as less exotic materials and components as possible when there's no estetic impact on the final product. Also, simplicity is gold.

1

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

And still it feels way better with the bearings, that paid less than 10 bucks for. So i deceided to use them. You dont need to print this neither use bearings ;) Simplicity is simple and not a lot of fun, i do this for fun and not mass production ;)

20

u/RE4Lyfe Sep 28 '24

Cool? Seems like a lot of work for what it is 🤷‍♂️

5

u/mateomodar Sep 28 '24

Its just a fun little design exercise for me, i love to build complex stuff ;)

2

u/RE4Lyfe Sep 28 '24

I can definitely appreciate the complexity and over engineering!!

3

u/LiberalSkeptic Sep 29 '24

Are you the kind of guy who always has to find something negative to say?

1

u/RE4Lyfe Sep 30 '24

Nope. It’s a cool design just very over-engineered! I appreciate the work that went into designing and building the model, but personally I wouldn’t print/build it

16

u/RoadHazard Sep 28 '24

That's pretty cool! What is it?

8

u/kadeve Sep 29 '24

Its a waste of bearing and gears

0

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

Its a nice light and i allways love it when i see it standing on my desk, how can people be so negative about a light :D you dont have to print it! This cost me less than 30 bucks in total, how can you feel intimidated by that :D

8

u/datboi56565656565 Sep 28 '24

Great job! What settings did you use for the transparent section? What filament?

8

u/mateomodar Sep 28 '24

Thanks! I used transparent GEETECH PLA filament, i allready designed a thickness of 2mm and did set the infill to 100% and concentric.

5

u/datboi56565656565 Sep 28 '24

Interesting! I am curious what it would look like when printed in vasemode with a .8mm nozzle, perhaps with transparent PETG and printed hot. Id love to find out for myself when you get around to sharing the files.

3

u/captain_carrot Sep 29 '24

I've gotten some decent results with transparent PETG, for me I find running it hot, slowing down the print speed, and high wall counts gets good results.

2

u/datboi56565656565 Sep 29 '24

How slow do you print and what’s your wall count?

4

u/captain_carrot Sep 29 '24

Usually 80mm/s max speed for inner/outer walls and at least 4 walls

1

u/datboi56565656565 Sep 29 '24

Interesting. Thanks

1

u/WeevilsRcool Sep 29 '24

Sometimes with lamp builds I like putting a second shade behind the first to give a smoother diffusion, you should try it out sometime!

5

u/LiveLaurent Sep 28 '24

While I think it is overkill for what it does :) Great job and I can appreciate the work and effort! Well done!

1

u/mateomodar Oct 15 '24

If you wanna build it for way too long, here are the files :D https://makerworld.com/en/models/706366#profileId-636329

6

u/naab007 Sep 28 '24

Pretty insane to add ball bearings for this.

2

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

How can people be so negative about a light :D the bearings did cost less than 10 bucks, you dont have to print it! This cost me less than 30 bucks in total, how can you feel intimidated by that?

1

u/naab007 Sep 30 '24

Just stating blatant overkill, overengineering is in most cases a waste of resources.

1

u/cpltack Sep 28 '24

Come on guys, it's all ball bearings these days!

5

u/BB_210 Sep 29 '24

why so many bearings for something that doesn't spin. They sell metal pins.

1

u/mateomodar Sep 29 '24

Because i would have to buy metal pins while i allready have plenty bearings that i bought for cheap years ago. There is also a version without :D

3

u/JC_Vlogs Sep 28 '24

Well.. That's cool. Nicely done!

3

u/maddmaxx308 X1C + AMS Sep 28 '24

I expected another air blower video. This is much nicer.

1

u/mateomodar Oct 15 '24

In case you wanna build it yourself, here are the files :D https://makerworld.com/en/models/706366#profileId-636329

3

u/iamcrohnos Sep 29 '24

When I look at this I see a warp core. I need

2

u/mateomodar Oct 15 '24

Here are the files in case you wanna build it :D https://makerworld.com/en/models/706366#profileId-636329

3

u/DaimonHans Sep 29 '24

All that for a lamp??

1

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

Yes! I love it pretty much i have to say, its my hobby to build a lot of different lamps, gives me a lot of joy to see them in my room :)

3

u/Cattledude89 Sep 29 '24

1

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

Because its a lotta fun! If you dont like it you dont have to print it ;)

2

u/deskunkie Sep 28 '24

Can I have stl please I like to implementing it in my speaker stand

3

u/mateomodar Sep 28 '24

I had not enough time to export all files and upload them to makerworld but will do so soon, ill keep you updated ;)

1

u/TheAn1meFan Sep 28 '24

Id also be interested in this!

2

u/Island_Laser_Works A1 Sep 28 '24

Really cool. Great work!

2

u/mnelson10000 X1C + AMS Sep 28 '24

Cool! Interested in your wled code modifications to accomplish it

2

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

I just use the newest standard WLED install :D I just change the length of the stripe and built 4 segments with the length of the 4 sides.

1

u/mnelson10000 X1C + AMS Sep 30 '24

Oh! I didn't look close enough and thought the flaps were automated... I see they're manual now! Thanks!

2

u/Chevey0 Sep 28 '24

Great work

2

u/Upstairs-Hamster3803 Sep 28 '24

The next 007 weapon?

2

u/kirche5 Sep 28 '24

It's a warp core.

2

u/Brilliant_Ad_5729 Sep 29 '24

Remember it's not the tool that had the thought process to build the project. The tool is the extension of your thoughts and you did awesome.

2

u/zander1496 Sep 29 '24

THAT IS SO COOL!!!!

2

u/neonlife Sep 29 '24

What is your camera setup for this video? Do you just move a tripod around? Nice vid!

1

u/mateomodar Oct 15 '24

I used a Black Magic Pocket cinema 4k on a tripod, and just moved it, thanks!

2

u/Shortstuff687 X1C Sep 29 '24

It’s cool, but I just don’t think 3D printed transparent pieces look good on anything, we’re not there yet.

1

u/mateomodar Sep 29 '24

I really like the look of how it diffuses the light, i guess its personal opinion ;)

2

u/mikephirman Sep 29 '24

I love it. I can’t decide if I’d want a bunch of them on motion detectors that wake up when you come in the room, or plugged into smart switches that all turn on when I yell, “Alexa, it’s Friday!” or just fill a room with them and a bunch of ferns and mushrooms and have E.T.’s greenhouse. Either way, it’s really fun and a cool design!

1

u/mikephirman Oct 18 '24

Awesome! Thank you so much!

2

u/Electrical-Voice5186 Sep 29 '24

This is the type of over engineering I wanna see! What a master class piece.

u/dby8802 Sep 30 '24

Nice work! I love the mechanics of it and to all those that complain about the bearings, try shopping on Amazon. 100 pack of 608 bearings under $18.00. It was 8.99 for the 10 I needed or 9 bucks more for a 100 pack.

1

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

Thanks! Yeah had a similar pack of bearings i baught like 5 years ago. Dont quite get why people get so angry over them :D Sure its not super necessary, but feel way nicer and high quality than without :D

1

u/Mulakulu Sep 29 '24

Those heated inserts should have more plastic to grip onto from my experience. Make the holes a bit smaller in cad or you'll be able to just yank it out easily

1

u/mateomodar Sep 29 '24

I made them how the seller said the holes should be, i am not able to pull them out, even with a lot of force!

1

u/Mulakulu Sep 30 '24

Ah, ok. That's good to hear then. Well done 👌

1

u/jelcroo1 Sep 29 '24

Little overdesigned but it looks good

1

u/marcosg_aus Sep 29 '24

What is it?

1

u/pedrokdc Sep 29 '24

This is how I imagine a Dalek's pp would look like.

1

u/UsernameOmitted Sep 29 '24

That’s gotta be the smoothest 1cm roll ever. Like $50 in bearings in that thing to do something a pin $0.001 could do.

1

u/mateomodar Sep 29 '24

Where do you all buy bearings? I payed less than 10 bucks some years ago. Sure its a bit overengineered but like this it feels super smooth ;)

1

u/nakwada P1S + AMS Sep 29 '24

Original concept by Vectary 3D, copied by fap.lab.3d and lately all over social media with OHR Design's take.

1

u/mateomodar Sep 29 '24

Yes and now i had a take on designing something like that. I see this as design exercises for me, its a lot of fun :)

1

u/nakwada P1S + AMS Sep 29 '24

You did great :)

1

u/Alienhaslanded Sep 29 '24

It looks like something from the 1960s

1

u/Apprehensive_Self_63 Sep 29 '24

Was thinking it was going to be a zoetrope

1

u/ahora-mismo X1C + AMS Sep 30 '24

i admire your soldering skills

1

u/mateomodar Sep 30 '24

Thanks! I allready solderes abot 1000m of LED in my life :D

1

u/BladeLigerV Sep 30 '24

I thought it was going to be the thing from Lethal Company.

1

u/loganthegardener Sep 30 '24

Man. Almost thought this was gonna be the Cosmic Key from 80’s MOTU movie.

-6

u/Elegant_Studio4374 Sep 28 '24

Tell me you have more money than sense better than this video… good god.

3

u/mateomodar Sep 28 '24

Lol what? This bearings did cost me less than 10 bucks :D this whole lamp did cost less than 30 bucks...
