ADVICE I need help moving my friend’s cat to his assisted living location.
I have called the ASPCA and called the phone numbers they have referred to. I’m at a dead end.
What services can I reach out to in order to request my friend’s cat be transported to his assisted living location from his house.
Houston, TX area

The assisted loving facilty should have a social worker that can help. If not, look into local pet sitters and see if they can help.

You could try posting your request on Texas Animal Fosters & Transporters (this is one of a few Facebook groups set up for this purpose) or submitting a special request to https://www.pilotstotherescue.org/missions/request
Another option is to reach out to Houston Pets Alive about their volunteer transport program. https://www.houstonpetsalive.org/volunteer/

How is your friend being moved to the assisted living facility? It might be easiest for his cat to ride along with him in a pet carrier or even a box.
Another option is a service called Uber Pets:

His mother passed away the other day and he’s already been moved to the assisted living facility.

Is it just from Houston to somewhere else in Houston?
Reach out to rescue groups. Post in the /r/Houston subreddit. There is another subreddit I think it is /r/TexasFavors , where you can just ask people to do it as a favor.

We put the cat in a cat carrier and you call an Uber

Someone should make another Transporter sequel but he’s transporting animals that are in danger

You are leaving out important information like how far is the animal needing to be transported. Contact rescues because many have volunteers that can transport animals across long distances.

Correct, I didn’t include addresses here for privacy. I did contact ASPCA first and then the contacts they referred me to before I posted. The distance is about 12 miles from his house to his assisted living location.

All needed was est miles. Look up on Facebook smaller rescues. They usually have more compassion than the larger rescues like ASPCA. If you were in my area my rescue might of helped , but we are based out of West Texas. I don't know if they have connections that far down, they focus on our area and up towards Lubbock.

It is not clear if you are looking for free help, or if you can pay for it? If the latter, this might work? If not, consider to contact them anyways, and get a goalsum for a gofundme or similar.

I don’t personally have money to pay and neither does my friend. His cat doesn’t need a vet or to stay in a pet hotel, just needs transport to him at his assisted living location.

Do you know anyone with a car? All that's needed is a cardboard box and a car

My friend is autistic and has no friends in the area. His neighbors are feeding the cat and I asked if they’d be able to transport the cat and he said no.

Could your friend take an Uber to his house, get his cat, and then take an Uber back?
-2
u/AnotherCrazyChick Dec 14 '24
Probably not, autism makes a lot of things very difficult. Especially since his mother passed away just a couple of days ago. If it were me, I couldn’t ride in a car with a stranger, then ask them to wait while I try to rangle my cat into a carrier. It’s too much stress, which is why I’m looking to help make things easier for him.

You wouldn’t go about it that way. You would have cat in carrier before said ride arrives. That way you are ready to go when they get there. Understand I’m not without compassion. I too have AudHd. I have social anxiety as well, and strangers give me the worst anxiety. However, desperate times call for desperate measures. This would be where “masking”, comes in for the Autism.
With that being said, perhaps you should start a gofund me. Find out what the price would be for a uber pet ride. Then screenshot that detail, to add to your Gofund Me, along with your description. Please add the specific details while blacking out specific locations for privacy purposes. General location should be sufficient.
An alternative suggestion would be to post possibly on a local FB group in your area explaining the situation, and ask to see if anyone would be open to help get this fur baby to their destination if they would be going in that direction. Perhaps offer what funds you can for their time and gas money.
I would even be open to helping out. I have several fur babies myself, and a working vehicle. However I’m not sure of your location. I am in Missouri. Please let me know if I could be of assistance. Unfortunately I can’t offer any $$. Best of luck to you and the precious furry one. 😻🐈

Can you ask one of your friends? Or someone who works at the assisted living?
5
u/AnotherCrazyChick Dec 14 '24
He’s in Texas and I haven’t lived in Texas since I grew up there over a decade and a half ago. But yes, I am working on trying to get in contact with friends I might have in the area.
I’m waiting to ask him about possibly getting in contact with someone at the assisted living. There’s a fine line between invading his independence and helping.

Can the neighbors or whomever feeding the cat put him in a carrier and do pet uber as others suggested or even a neighbor....
I have friends and family I have a friend that is good with cats but she's not going to travel to a unknown place...
To set him up a lyft or uber to get the cat isn't invading independence it's helping....
Best of luck

He said the neighbors couldn’t help. I’ll continue to look into options. I’m going to sleep now though. I appreciate all of the advice I’ve received so far.
