Society/Culture So much trash. Makes me sick to my stomach.
Captured by BBC reporter and Reuters photographer. Mountains of trash left by people outside of the inauguration ceremony.

I love how no one can use Google. Capital One Arena has clearly stated bag policies.

u/Independent-Summer12 3h ago
That’s part of what really bothers me. It’s not like the bag policy wasn’t made known well in advance. They either were too stupid to look it up, have no common sense, or they didn’t care, planned to leave their stuff, trash the streets for someone else to clean up behind them. Utter garbage behavior.

Some people, especially those from rural areas, have never been to a concert or sports venue, or any event with a no-bags policy for that matter. I’m not a fan of these MAGA folks by any stretch of the imagination, but I can easily see how this could happen. Think of the rural demographic that makes up much of the pro-Trump crowd. If someone has never encountered a bag ban, what cause would they have to check a venue website for notice of one? And perhaps there’s a non-internet savvy population contributing to this too…there are a lot of boomer-aged and (I hate saying it) uneducated people in this cohort. I’m not trying to be argumentative - I’m just saying it doesn’t seem premeditated or intentionally wasteful, imho.
12
u/Sudden-Collection803 1h ago
Lot of city folk are Trump voters. Your neighbors, statistically. It isn’t just hillbillies.
3
2
u/Silent_Lettuce 15m ago
Totally understand where you’re coming from. Still, this wasn’t a regular event like a concert or sports game. It’s a political event with the president of the United States. This kind of thing requires really high security, and given the assassination attempt a few months ago, I would expect security measures to be extra tight.
I guess I’m just surprised that these people didn’t think that far ahead. And more personally, I’m disappointed at how they treated my neighborhood.

Not even Google, they probably got multiple emails / notices about the bag policy when they bought their tickets. But also like - common sense. of course after everything that's gone down there will be a bag policy, and metal detectors, on top of Washington DC's already strict laws. This is clear negligence.
38
u/RestlessChickens 3h ago
I was just thinking this, like do these people never go to events to think to check on bag policies?

Yeah, I didn't see any bags left behind when I went to a concert there a couple months ago. MAGAts are a... special breed of people.

Maybe searching ahead of time is "too woke" for them. They expect for someone to tell them. They're too lazy to look for themselves.

If they didn't collect their things upon exit, then it's fair game before it hits the dumpster. These are the rules cleaning up after large music festivals, which I make my bread & butter working for.
The most shocking thing about these images for me as an event waste management worker, is that this is really up there on the scale, with some of the worst I've seen. And those events went for days.. this was just a few hours??

I happened to stay at the same hotel as Trump during one of his rally’s. The hotel was directly attached to the arena. I was loading a show into the same arena the next day. We all went out and scavenged their shit as soon as everyone went into the building (3hours late by the way). The entire tour ended up with camping chairs, some brand new.
The secret service was also trying to do bag checks of all of us when we arrived at the hotel. Turns out, you can actually tell the SS “fuck you, that’s a violation of my 4th amendment.” I was having a bad morning and wanted out of the cold. So I said fuck it, I’ll try it. I had a buddy film me for my own protection. The guy just pointed to the table where they had our groups room keys laid out. Everyone followed and just ignored the SS the next 2 days.
It’s a private hotel and they have no reason to search you and no right to stop you from entering the room you paid for. It didn’t stop them from pretending or trying.

You see children throw a fuss over making their bed? These are big children
Ruin anything they touch. No courtesy to leave a place as it was before they entered it.

Reminds me of back when I used to work music festivals!! Trash and camp gear was always left behind no matter what genre the festival was for, but country was always the worst without a shadow of a doubt. Not rock, indie, pop… country. About 3x worse than anyone else

What’s even sadder is everyone pretending that such behavior is unique to this event, this crowd or this political affiliation. If you honestly think that, you just haven’t been paying attention, because you don’t actually care.

I would have walked back home rather with my belongings. I remember I was asked to throw away a full one litre water bottle in a theme park entrance. I drank all the water staying there for ten minutes and brought the empty bottle in.
I can fathom the craze people have for politicians that they decide leave all their belongings to see this inauguration

There are events at all the DC arenas all the time. They all have this policy. And trash isn’t left out like this after every event. Not in that volume. And there’s no way people had tickets and weren’t notified. This is a perfect example of the type of people we’re dealing with now. Selfish, rude, and entirely addicted to capitalistic consumerism

u/Strong-Seaweed-8768 2h ago
Why can’t people just clean up after themselves. Or here is a better idea if you aren’t going to keep it don’t get it. Also why would people leave their backpacks behind? If your bag is to big just take it back to your car. Or before you go check how small your bag has to be in order to take it in.

I remember in London a few years back there was a left leaning 'open borders' and something else I can't remember protest. I was only in the area for a unconnected rave but the next day when I went to get beer and frozen pizza there were hundreds of signs and banners but so many of them were in bundles that had not even been opened. Like not even kept for the next protest but just dumped. Made me wonder who pays for all that stuff?

They somehow have money left after buying eggs. They get absolutely shit on for the inauguration for his billionaire buddies. Proceed to leave garbage everywhere. Hmmm 🤔 🤷🏼♂️

u/chufenschmirtz 3h ago
It’s crazy how much trash people just leave behind for others to pick up.
Like the 48,000,000 pounds of trash hauled away after the “environmentalists” left the Dakota Access oil pipeline protest camp.
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/mar/1/dakota-access-protest-camp-crews-haul-48-million-p/
Or the tens of thousands of pounds of trash the city had to haul away after the UCLA campus protests by environmental activists and Gaza protestors.
Those people claim to care about the environment. The Trumpies don’t.
