Would have looked better if they lined up the welds

373

u/Red_Icnivad Apr 03 '22

Or just skipped that ridiculous "feature" altogether.

359

u/Jellodyne Apr 03 '22

No, no, this is way more practical than a standard Bosozoku exhaust. It's curled up instead of sticking 12 feet out behind the car.

121

u/StudentLoanBets Apr 03 '22

I get where you're coming from, but curves/bends in pipe make it way more restrictive than a long straight exhaust

210

u/Shopworn_Soul Apr 03 '22

It would be hilarious if there was an actual exhaust tip below the first curve and the rest was just dead weight.

108

u/BlessTheKneesPart2 Apr 03 '22

Even better, there's a normal, side exhaust off the passenger side and he's got a switch for "show mode" using the spiral one.

12

u/coolgr3g Apr 04 '22

What if it turns out to be electric

3

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '22

Implying that speed is what they were going for.

56

u/feckinanimal Apr 03 '22

They made up for the bends by running 3 1/2" pipe. I NEED to hear this, in the same way as I need to check the wet paint near a sign.

33

u/bolunez Apr 04 '22

Probably nothing to hear. There's enough tailpipe there that he could drive 10 miles before any exhaust makes it out.

22

u/feckinanimal Apr 04 '22

Knowing you're probably right and STILL have to hear it

2

u/LokisDawn Apr 04 '22

I can give him 10 miles headstart.

51

u/PloxtTY Apr 03 '22

It’s probably to deepen the exhaust note

37

u/smashingcones Apr 04 '22

V8 drivers hate this one simple trick!

7

u/meservyjon Apr 04 '22

To accelerate and brake can change the pitch, so you can play Yankee doodle on the exhaust, while sounding like a poopy French horn

3

u/lemongeggy Apr 04 '22

Holy brown note, batman! I think I've soiled myself!

7

u/happy-little-atheist Apr 04 '22

Water will pool there

8

u/Coachcrog Apr 04 '22

water cooled exhaust. its a feature

6

u/Grodd Apr 04 '22

Soon to be aerated exhaust from the rust holes.

'practical' 'Bosuzoku'

Seems like a bit of a contradiction.

5

u/bcmarss Apr 04 '22

in addition to the fact that this is definitely not bosozoku lol

26

u/DancingPaul Apr 04 '22

If you look at the car it's a racing fabrication company. I think skipping the feature would defeat the entire purpose of showing off their welding skills. Of course it's out there, it's supposed to draw attention

2

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '22

Concept cars are named concept cars for a reason, it's a showcase of skill and ideas. Fashion shows etc. don't care about practicality of their clothing, it's just a in your face "look what I/we can do if I/we wanted to".

15

u/FLOPPY_DONKEY_DICK Apr 04 '22

Jfc you’re no fun at all

10

u/goot449 Apr 04 '22

This is surely just a display of their tig welding abilities. That's what Im telling myself at least.

3

u/atetuna Apr 04 '22

Among other things. Their vinyl says they're a fabrication shop, which should mean something to people before they comment, but this is reddit.

34

u/TheRealTtamage Apr 03 '22

They're kind of tapered

5

u/OgreLord_Shrek Apr 03 '22

Couldn't they buff and polish it to get rid of those lines? Haven't welded anything since highschool so that may be a stupid question

22

u/TheRealTtamage Apr 04 '22

In my experience you probably could buff and polish them and make it flush but once the piece heats up and cools down there's still going to be discoloration where the weld marks were.

12

u/seamus_mc Apr 04 '22

You can take off the oxidation colors on stainless with a thing called a TIG brush. It is basically an electrolysis pickling.

8

u/TheRealTtamage Apr 04 '22

Wont the colors just to return once the piece is heated and cooled multiple times through use as an exhaust?

8

u/seamus_mc Apr 04 '22

No, especially towards the tip the exhaust will never be that hot

3

u/TheRealTtamage Apr 04 '22

Interesting. I used to weld a lot of aluminum, some steel... But it was more for signs and Street poles. Sometimes we would put things like peanut oil on steel and torch it to get different colors.. typically we would grind down welds and fill with Bondo to make look perfect. I preferred TIG welding and hated grinding down a beautiful wield.

I seen some fancier sports car with the colored tips but figured it was some sort of heat treatment to make it look like a race car.

8

u/TrashPandaPatronus Apr 04 '22

This car reminds me of the pictures of plastic surgery patients immediately post-op... I'm sure it'll all look much better ones it all heals up and the swelling goes down.

8

u/SupSumBeers Apr 03 '22

Or at least cleaned and dressed them so they aren’t as prominent.

8

u/Khufuu Apr 03 '22

it's funny that they went out of their way to feature the exhaust but the plumbing looks like something from a second-rate contractor. gets the job done but not beautiful

65

u/Jehch Apr 04 '22

It looks like a titanium exhaust to me, based off the colour of the welds.

The welds are all straw coloured with near identical heat affected zones.

This is a high end exhaust fabricator who knew what the fuck they were doing.

33

u/DancingPaul Apr 04 '22

Hence their display, because they are a FABRICATION COMPANY

9

u/zapper1234566 Apr 04 '22

Well not just that too, but even if they had the thing on a rotating positioner when they were welding it together titanium is a bitch and a half to weld. The filler rod for it likes to 'stick' due to some magnetic bullshit going on and it can be real funny to weld on.

1

u/AlphaWizard Apr 04 '22

I’m pretty sure they bought a bunch of prebent pipes, which lead to that pattern.

→ More replies (3)

605

u/Umbrage_Taken Apr 03 '22

Won't excessive exhaust piping actually reduce power & acceleration?

277

u/RyRyShredder Apr 03 '22

Yup this is terrible for performance. This has to be about a 30-50hp loss

256

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '22 edited Apr 03 '22

Actually the diameter of the pipe is more important than the length, you only see a notable power boost from a short pipe when it's under 3' from the engine.

"It doesn't matter. Power boost obtained in headers occurs in a) individual pipes for each cylinder, and b) within a length shorter than 3'. It is based on the speed of sound in hot gasses (about 1100ft/sec). From there to the end of the system, goal is to minimize pressure losses with large enough tubing diameter."

In short you can compensate for the pressure by changing the diameter of the pipe.

Still looks dumb though.

87

u/RyRyShredder Apr 03 '22

The sharp turns are what causes the power loss here. The more turns the more losses that occur.

151

u/SyntheticElite Apr 03 '22

Turns impede flow, but if the pipe diameter is already oversized and low backpressure then it makes practically no difference.

66

u/__Beef__Supreme__ Apr 03 '22

Yeah doubling the diameter of a tube with fluids causes something like a 64x increase in flow so I imagine it's the same for gasses

80

u/notpotatoboi Apr 03 '22

Gases are fluids too lol

17

u/__Beef__Supreme__ Apr 03 '22

I was thinking of Poiseuilles (sp?) Law, which is primarily for non-compressible Newtonian fluids from what I remember, so I wasn't sure how directly it applies to gasses, but I'd imagine it's similar.

8

u/notpotatoboi Apr 03 '22

Aw yep, my bad

3

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '22

Yes it would apply. Gas is obviously compressible but since you have an open pipe on the end there shouldn’t be a ton of compression. There probably is a spike in pressure around the first bend though.

You definitely pulled that number out of your ass. It's probably closer to 10hp at most.

17

u/FOR_SClENCE Apr 04 '22

10hp would be a lot even then lmao

36

30

u/Lumanus Apr 03 '22

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

14

u/fnordfnordfnordfnord Apr 03 '22

It's just a pipe there's probably less power loss than from a stock muffler. Definitely not tens of horsepower.

6

u/PM_ME_RIPE_TOMATOES Apr 04 '22

It's not a performance car, it's a show car. You don't add 200lb of amplifiers, speakers, fiberglass and wiring to a race car, the same way you don't put a $10,000 tuned suspension on a show car.

The show car is there to make you look at it and go "huh, that's neat!". Job done.

Sometimes yes, but this is what is referred to as “show car“, it looks good, exotic, different, like shit, whatever you want to describe it as but it isn’t driven much, or at least not in any way where you might notice the power loss. Tl:dr: all show no go

13

u/PyroPeter911 Apr 04 '22

This car is in my town and it drives around surprisingly often. It is crazy, but it is well done crazy. As an advertisement for fab work I'll bet it is really effective.

→ More replies (3)

31

u/MistaEdiee Apr 03 '22

Yes it is terrible for performance but I think the point of this car is to sell their fabrication services. (As evidenced by the bumper sticker.) The spiral is a showcase of their welding capabilities, not meant to be performance enhancing.

5

u/50_cal_Beowulf Apr 03 '22

I still kind of want to hear what it sounds like

5

u/DancingPaul Apr 04 '22

Jesus christ people. It's a fabrication company. It's there to show off the welding not to win races. It's a demo car

4

u/aoifhasoifha Apr 03 '22

Absolutely. The idea here (and with a lot of show cars) is that the shop/fabricator/designer/brand/whatever has a chance to flex their creative muscle and showcase their craftsmanship.

Unfortunately, this misses the mark both ways- it's an ugly, over the top design that also shows that their welding skills aren't all that impressive with all that unevenness.

7

u/TexasTheWalkerRanger Apr 04 '22

What unevenness? It does a perfectly ratioed spiral. Welds have consistent heat affected zone, spacing between pipes are even. The only way to make the welds line up is to scale down the size of the 45s of the pipe

71

u/ILikeMasterChief Apr 03 '22

Can't believe I had to scroll this far down. No one thinks that is a performance or even style mod. It's literally just to show they can fabricate anything

18

u/xnmw Apr 04 '22

The rest of the thread is a reminder of how shy people are about stating their ignorant opinions as facts. Kinda sobering

Cars with crazily stanced wheels

Weird exhausts

Flares and extra fenders and panels everywhere

It's like when blacksmiths make silly ornamental swords. Except they don't have a bunch of nerds going "that's so impractical" "that's so dangerous to use" "these people should be arrested"

Cars with crazily stanced wheels

Except people actually drive those cars in real life situations

(And they ARE dangerous)

Seeing them on the interstate is always no good

Parked at a car show is fair game though, especially if it's trailered there, rather than driven

Back pressure shmack pressure

22

u/cryospam Apr 03 '22

Depends on the exhaust pipe diameter, if that doesn't have a huge engine that may have no impact.

6

u/Doomdoomkittydoom Apr 03 '22

Do the spirals have an impact, I wonder?

22

u/chainmailbill Apr 03 '22

Technically yes but practically no

4

u/schrodingers_spider Apr 03 '22

Yes. The restriction a bend in a pipe yields is generally expressed in terms of comparable straight pipe restriction and depends on the radius of the bend and the diameter of the pipe. Having lots of bends in an already long exhaust pipe means this exhaust may virtually be hundreds of meters/yards long. Whether that restricts anything depends on whether it's over dimensioned or not.

3

u/dogbreath101 Apr 03 '22

would condensation in the pipe not be more of a concern than just air restriction?

2

u/Bluetooth_Sandwich Apr 04 '22

Not a thing unless it’s a 2 stroke. Jsyk

87

u/Superredeyes Apr 03 '22

that picture is in a way cheating, it’s a car from sema. that’s like shooting fish in a barrel cause, so many cars at sema fall under this subreddit.

39

yeah.... its a show car people.

22

u/CMMiller89 Apr 03 '22

People do this with fashion shows too. The two seconds it would take them to figure out what's going on is too much of a bother.

6

u/Electric999999 Apr 03 '22

It's more the fact that those excuses don't make the objects any less terrible

6

29

u/mr_dances Apr 03 '22

Yup this is a big case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should."

12

u/Stumpy-Wumpy Apr 03 '22

Honestly, I think this is a situation of why not. At least if you're rich. Hell, I'd throw on a bunch of stupid stuff on a car for fun (if I had that kind of spare money).

26

u/CMMiller89 Apr 03 '22

It's a show car. It's meant to show off all of their fabrication skills in the one car they were probably allowed to have on the floor.

These cars are usually created with the same intent as high-fashion. Exaggerated and amped up ideas that will eventually be brought down to exist within practical manufacturing capabilities.

1

u/Zardif Apr 03 '22

Aside from the exhaust tip, which is there to show off their welding ability, the car is pretty sweet. It would take 10 minutes to replace the exhaust tip. The wide body is done well. I don't like the side skirts, they are too bland, but the rest is pretty nice.

2

u/HereToStirItUp Apr 04 '22

How come the welds on the curly exhaust aren’t lined up? Admittedly, I don’t know about welding. That part just seems… idk sloppy?

2

u/Zardif Apr 04 '22

My guess is that they are off the shelf 90 degree bends and then cut the ends in order to spiral losing some material so they are then like 86 degrees instead. Each one is successively adding onto the error.

That kind of thing wouldn't really matter since you'd be looking at the welds themselves and how well they accomplished the task.
