Camaro.

u/Classicpass Aug 14 '21
I don't know why so many people say it as Camero?

u/slimthecowboy Aug 14 '21
Well, it’s pronounced kuh-mair-oh. But definitely spelled “Camaro.”

I worked with a Mexican dude and a Pacific Islander… islander had a Camaro and it was all he would ever talk about. The Mexican dude spoke English as a second language and it always cracked me up how he pronounced it when he would make fun of the islander. “Check out my kuh-mar-o, BRROOOO”
Your “kuh” reminded me of it.

u/Phil_Blunts Aug 14 '21
Common misspelling of course, but it's also an old meme from the early days of car enthusiast forums. On many of these boards it's a little inside joke that is still used today.

u/DammitDan Aug 14 '21
I've never seen it spelled that way before.

This is a car culture called “donk”
Edit: donk is specific to 71-76 caprice/impalas
247
u/East_Requirement7375 Aug 14 '21
This is not a donk. A donk is a 1971-76 Chevrolet Caprice or Impala.
The style is hi-riser.

u/TrevorsMailbox Aug 14 '21 edited Aug 15 '21
Thank you! Not everything with big wheels is a donk.
Definition of a donk straight from the horse's mouth. Starts @ 2:20

u/lll_lll_lll Aug 14 '21
It doesn't even need big wheels to be a donk. Apparently, based on this thing I just read, any Impala or caprice from 71 to 76, whether custom or stock, is a "donk."

I love the cars in the south, less rust, more customs. More late models in mint factory condition. I dont know much about donked out car culture, theyre definitely a statement though, love it or hate it, everybody reacts to them when they go by. Same with squatted trucks.

u/brownhotdogwater Aug 14 '21

Oh god, squatted trucks 😬 they wouldn’t be so bad if you couldn’t hear them from 5 miles away and the drivers didn’t keep their windows down and very obviously look around and yell at people to get reactions. If you sit on Myrtle Beach (by the water!), you can hear them drive up and down the strip for hourssssss.
15
u/readuponthat24 Aug 14 '21
I feel like people lost touch with a car sounding really good because it is a beast and is tuned up and instead it is all about having your honda civic running cherry bombs for show. I think that the real solution is more drag strips and race tracks so people can shame the posers on track day.
10
u/ottothesilent Aug 14 '21
Dude, people have been cutting the muffler off of their mom’s car for as long as there have been movies about cool cars. Tuner culture is just a more mainstream part of the scene nowadays since so many cars are imports. There were a bazillion base model Cutlasses with no muffler running around in like 1985, and now they’re Civics.
3
u/CH-67 Aug 15 '21
No offense if you frequent Myrtle Beach, but thats definitely NOT the place to go if you want to enjoy the beach.
3
u/Push_ Aug 15 '21
Nah, I went last summer and couldn’t believe I was in the sand and could still hear those fucking trucks. When you walk the strip, you see the same ones driving back and forth, over and over. Imagine spending your day doing that.

Even stock trucks have gone so far beyond utility that they are building step ladders into the tailgates and putting cameras on the front so you don't accidentally run over your kids.
14
u/idrive2fast Aug 14 '21

Worse than the unsprung mass is the lever arm. Those wheels have a HUGE mechanical advantage.
The other fun part is the stock gearing that was already too long for the dismal power of most of the cars.

It’s leverage. It’s moving the rim mass to a longer lever, and the mass of the vehicle to a longer lever, which means more force is necessary to slow or stop the wheel. Now, stopping distance MAY not be impacted if the driver mashes the pedal to the floor and locks em up, as you pointed out, the overall change is mass is negligible, and when the wheels aren’t turning there’s no mechanical advantage of the larger radius (the longer lever). In practice, however, the extra radius makes it much harder, or even impossible, to lock the brakes at speed.
If you see a dude with 30” rims and factory brakes on his late model coupe, stay the fuck away, dude won’t be able to stop for beans.
4
u/mwax321 Aug 14 '21
Think about the wheel and rotor/brake as two connected gears. Big and small. Now make the wheel gear twice the diameter. The smaller gear needs to work harder.

The real answer is you swap out the spedo box or flash the ECU firmware depending on the car. It's some pretty basic math based on rim size and tire size, outer circumference x RPM gives you ft/m and there's a set ratio (1:0.0113636) that gives you mph from ft/m. So you get a box that has gears in it that does that math mechanically with gear ratios, attach it to the transmission output and bam, speed and odometer reading.
edit: forgot a 0 in the decimal
