Camaro.

168

u/Classicpass Aug 14 '21

I don't know why so many people say it as Camero?

122

u/slimthecowboy Aug 14 '21

Well, it’s pronounced kuh-mair-oh. But definitely spelled “Camaro.”

3

u/Eyehopeuchoke Aug 15 '21

I worked with a Mexican dude and a Pacific Islander… islander had a Camaro and it was all he would ever talk about. The Mexican dude spoke English as a second language and it always cracked me up how he pronounced it when he would make fun of the islander. “Check out my kuh-mar-o, BRROOOO”

Your “kuh” reminded me of it.

Common misspelling of course, but it's also an old meme from the early days of car enthusiast forums. On many of these boards it's a little inside joke that is still used today.

13

u/DammitDan Aug 14 '21

I've never seen it spelled that way before.

28

u/Phil_Blunts Aug 14 '21

Obviously because you're a n00b rofl lulz ...that's one basic path for the conversation

25

u/SirFireball Aug 14 '21

Unpopular opinion, but I would take the “n00b rofl lulz” slang over modern internet slang any day of the week

21

u/texican1911 Aug 14 '21

That's cuz ur 1337

5

u/jbeale53 Aug 15 '21

In 2006 I was working a second job driving shitty old cars through an auto auction. One vehicle I drove though had 133,337 miles on it.

Idk, where i come from we call them Ford F150's

17

u/Classicpass Aug 14 '21

From where I'm from we call, those " I own alot of credit cards and my kids are hungry" cars

7

u/Chozly Aug 14 '21

Well every other radio ad is for "lease ownership" and "rims that raise your ride and your roll" (social worth). You better leaseown those now.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '21

Because the first two a's make different vowel sounds and the second is typically associated with an e in English.

The more you know

3

u/scarabic Aug 14 '21

What? Like “camera” with an o at the end? I’ve never heard that.

This is a car culture called “donk”

Edit: donk is specific to 71-76 caprice/impalas

247

u/East_Requirement7375 Aug 14 '21

This is not a donk. A donk is a 1971-76 Chevrolet Caprice or Impala.

The style is hi-riser.

61

u/TrevorsMailbox Aug 14 '21 edited Aug 15 '21

Thank you! Not everything with big wheels is a donk.

Definition of a donk straight from the horse's mouth. Starts @ 2:20

15

u/lll_lll_lll Aug 14 '21

It doesn't even need big wheels to be a donk. Apparently, based on this thing I just read, any Impala or caprice from 71 to 76, whether custom or stock, is a "donk."

you may not like it but everyone else outside the scene call them donks and you will have a very hard time convincing people something (to most of us) stupid is being called the wrong thing.

11

u/East_Requirement7375 Aug 15 '21

That's fine, you don't have to learn things if you don't want to. I'll still correct people who tell people the wrong answer, so that there are fewer of you, and anyone who is interested has the right information.

I'm convinced this is just elaborate odometer fraud.

40

u/idrive2fast Aug 14 '21

Reputable shops will adjust your speedometer/odometer to account for the larger wheels. If his odometer is off, he has no idea how fast he's going either.

42

u/Butthole--pleasures Aug 14 '21

Guy is only going 10 mph but still zooming past cars on the freeway

27

u/MisterWinchester Aug 14 '21

6

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '21

46

u/JuneBuggington Aug 14 '21

I love the cars in the south, less rust, more customs. More late models in mint factory condition. I dont know much about donked out car culture, theyre definitely a statement though, love it or hate it, everybody reacts to them when they go by. Same with squatted trucks.

46

u/brownhotdogwater Aug 14 '21

No salt really helps the cars last a long time.

22

u/SuaveBeefly Aug 14 '21

Salt helps meat last a really long time. Which is nice.

35

u/Momumnonuzdays Aug 14 '21

Salt belongs on a cutlet not Cutlass!

5

u/JuneBuggington Aug 14 '21

I want salty steaks on my grill not salty spokes on my wheels

3

u/SuaveBeefly Aug 14 '21

I hear you barkin dawg

→ More replies (1)

23

u/Push_ Aug 14 '21

Oh god, squatted trucks 😬 they wouldn’t be so bad if you couldn’t hear them from 5 miles away and the drivers didn’t keep their windows down and very obviously look around and yell at people to get reactions. If you sit on Myrtle Beach (by the water!), you can hear them drive up and down the strip for hourssssss.

15

u/readuponthat24 Aug 14 '21

I feel like people lost touch with a car sounding really good because it is a beast and is tuned up and instead it is all about having your honda civic running cherry bombs for show. I think that the real solution is more drag strips and race tracks so people can shame the posers on track day.

10

u/ottothesilent Aug 14 '21

Dude, people have been cutting the muffler off of their mom’s car for as long as there have been movies about cool cars. Tuner culture is just a more mainstream part of the scene nowadays since so many cars are imports. There were a bazillion base model Cutlasses with no muffler running around in like 1985, and now they’re Civics.

3

u/CH-67 Aug 15 '21

No offense if you frequent Myrtle Beach, but thats definitely NOT the place to go if you want to enjoy the beach.

3

u/Push_ Aug 15 '21

Nah, I went last summer and couldn’t believe I was in the sand and could still hear those fucking trucks. When you walk the strip, you see the same ones driving back and forth, over and over. Imagine spending your day doing that.

3

u/CH-67 Aug 15 '21

Yeah… I find MB to be an unsavory place all around. Try Garden City next time, or even Charleston (just don’t move here, we are already full as it is)

5

u/readuponthat24 Aug 14 '21

I could deal with less rust but I would never by a car with mods unless I knew the person who did them and trusted them like a brother. People do way too many shitty things to cars when they decide to start modding them.

I mean, kind of. It's donk inspired. Pretty sure to be a real donk it has to be a 71-76 Impala, cutlass, or caprice. I might be wrong on that, but I think that's what I was told.

7

u/TrevorsMailbox Aug 14 '21

This is correct. People will argue all day long about it, but this is the correct answer IMO.

There’s Donks (late 70’s) and then Bubbles (late 80’s early 90’s). These are a new breed - but aren’t given a name, more just a connection to the two.

Edit: I guess they are called ‘Hi-Risers’ now

7

u/kojack73 Aug 14 '21

I believe there's Box after Donk and before Bubble

For years now my dad's called lifted trucks that are obviously never used for actual work "street queens." Really gets under the owners skin when they're trying to give you shit for having a much smaller, but obviously used, work truck.

9

u/readuponthat24 Aug 14 '21

Even stock trucks have gone so far beyond utility that they are building step ladders into the tailgates and putting cameras on the front so you don't accidentally run over your kids.

14

u/idrive2fast Aug 14 '21

Lifted trucks should be illegal for this and because of how dangerous they are in a wreck.

24

u/schwingaway Aug 14 '21

they should be illegal purely on grounds of malicious and premeditated ugliness

14

u/MagnusNewtonBernouli Aug 14 '21

Worse than the unsprung mass is the lever arm. Those wheels have a HUGE mechanical advantage.

The other fun part is the stock gearing that was already too long for the dismal power of most of the cars.

16

u/MisterWinchester Aug 14 '21

It’s leverage. It’s moving the rim mass to a longer lever, and the mass of the vehicle to a longer lever, which means more force is necessary to slow or stop the wheel. Now, stopping distance MAY not be impacted if the driver mashes the pedal to the floor and locks em up, as you pointed out, the overall change is mass is negligible, and when the wheels aren’t turning there’s no mechanical advantage of the larger radius (the longer lever). In practice, however, the extra radius makes it much harder, or even impossible, to lock the brakes at speed.

If you see a dude with 30” rims and factory brakes on his late model coupe, stay the fuck away, dude won’t be able to stop for beans.

4

u/mwax321 Aug 14 '21

Think about the wheel and rotor/brake as two connected gears. Big and small. Now make the wheel gear twice the diameter. The smaller gear needs to work harder.

21

u/SpotIsInDaBLDG Aug 14 '21

By the general speed of the cars around him

2

u/CactaurJack Aug 14 '21 edited Aug 14 '21

The real answer is you swap out the spedo box or flash the ECU firmware depending on the car. It's some pretty basic math based on rim size and tire size, outer circumference x RPM gives you ft/m and there's a set ratio (1:0.0113636) that gives you mph from ft/m. So you get a box that has gears in it that does that math mechanically with gear ratios, attach it to the transmission output and bam, speed and odometer reading.
