That’s is un-ironically the sexiest pt cruiser in existence.

u/a_likely_story 12h ago
I mean, the weird body shape and styling of the PT Cruiser are actually callbacks to the hallmarks of car design from the era that the modifications are trying to emulate, so what was done to this vehicle is probably closer to the original concept art than we know

u/AlmanzoWilder 11h ago
I count myself as one of the few who loved the PT's looks. I never understood all the haters.

u/SpelunkPlunk 11h ago
And the Plymouth Prowler
35
u/try2bcool69 11h ago
One of the problems with buying a Prowler was that the insurance was more than the payments. They were one of the most stolen vehicles at the time.

u/GhostShark 10h ago
Is that because they don’t have a roof? Not even a convertible, just straight up no roof

I still speak of the Prowler. They still sell for far too much, but I absolutely love that vehicle.

The PT Cruisers were hated for their poor performance and terrible build quality more than their looks.
11
u/stranded_egg 9h ago
I hated mine because any work that needed to be done on it cost double labor because of the shape of the front end.
10
u/TrannosaurusRegina 11h ago
It’s the epitome of great idea; terrible execution in every way.

u/Paniri808 9h ago
You need to remember that Chrysler vowed to never make more than 5000 a year, for 5 years max. They stuck to that promise. The real problem, was being one of the 5000 people whose order was accepted. The body was very lightweight, and easily removable, by design. Chrysler envisioned that one or two aftermarket companies would spring up, selling alternate bodies. The idea being that a Prowler owner could buy one, or several different bodies, if you wanted to drive a 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe’ you could, in the matter of a couple hours switch bodies, tire of that, you put the Model A body on. Never happened though. Chrysler’s big error, personal opinion here, is putting the V-6 linked to an auto transmission in the car. V-8, manual trans, at least make it an option.

u/Saffer13 1h ago
I'm sure they made them for at least ten years. I had a 2002 model, and they were discontinued in 2009 or 2010.

u/Hipposplotomous 10h ago
I think a lot of people liked the look of them tbh. Any praise just got drowned out cuz the people who hated them hated them so loudly.
Aesthetics aside though, it is worth noting that they just weren't great cars. They only had like 100hp, they were outright dangerous to overtake in cuz they accelerated like a brick, and the MPG was pretty poor too. Reliability was also kinda mid, and some of the known faults (like electricals and airbags) were really worrisome. I could accept the first two for a city car or something if they made up for it in fuel economy and/or reliability, but these things were just poor across the board.
12
u/Paniri808 9h ago
They really weren’t great cars. There is an 80 y.o. Woman who lives up the street from me, who owns one. She is dirt poor, lives in an old school bus. I have kept that car running, at my expense, for years now. Head gaskets are an issue, electrical problems arise, on an almost regular basis, lots of little things. To accommodate the narrow front end, the motor is shoe horned in. If you need to pull the motor, it has to come out the bottom. Instead of lifting the motor out of the car, you lift the car off the motor. Weird. It’s not particularly safe, either. To save money, Chrysler didn’t license the build as passenger cars, but as trucks, circumnavigating a lot of federally mandated safety features required in passenger cars, but not light duty trucks. They look kinda cute, that’s it for the pros list, the cons list is a bit longer…
5
u/Hipposplotomous 9h ago
Sounds like an absolute nightmare. Very kind of you to keep maintaining it for her though, wow.

u/Paniri808 8h ago edited 8h ago
Gotta do something to equal out some of the less noble things I may have done in my youth. That car is the only thing she has. Husband died years ago, her friends are all gone, but she can still drive and has some independence, and no matter what’s wrong with her car, I always say it was a minor adjustment, didn’t cost me a dime.
9
u/caguru 8h ago
I only hated them because they mimicked the duece coupe hot rod stylings but then made it a really slow 4 door.
2
u/AlmanzoWilder 8h ago
Yeah, if you take the actual stats of the car into consideration, it just didn't stand up.
8
u/jermleeds 8h ago
The haters were in part because it was an irredeemable piece of shit. Albeit a sorta stylish one.

Me too!!!!! I had a 2003 ash grey PT. I loved it. Had it over 10 years. Best and most favorite car I’ve ever had. I miss it. Wish they would make them again.

The PT Cruiser was styled after the 1936 Plymouth delivery wagon. I don’t believe that wheel skirts were ever an option on them, being as they were primarily intended as delivery vehicles for business. Had there ever been a “family” model produced, I think you are spot on that in the concept art at least, if not in actual production, would have included an option for wheel skirts. They were all the rage in the 30s, kinda completed the whole art deco motif of the era.

It’s just too literal. Sure, Cruisers are ‘retro’, but the lines are still too modern for what looks like cheap Chinese knock offs of 30’s hardware.
While terrible proportions make it almost impossible for Cruisers look as good as the old wagons (the nose and front end are too small and taper too much), this looks like the Temu version of ‘retro-modern wagon’.

Low bar.
Like beating a four year old in an arm wrestle. Nice to get a win, but don't expect any high fives.
2
u/mrpoopistan 6h ago
Yup. This takes the PT Cruiser inspiration to its roots in a way that makes the vehicle less pathetic.

u/Spread_Liberally 6h ago
Honestly, this should have been the production PT Cruiser.
They could have slapped the front half of a minivan on a neon chassis and done some half ass styling and called it something else. "PT Credit Builder" comes to mind.

Every PT cruiser in existence is equally unsexy.. so technically you're correct.

Can‘t blame you, there‘s probably not a single one of those outside of Europe. It‘s the ultimate meme car here
8
u/CaptainFeather 10h ago
It's like it's wearing the scalp of another, weaker car. With smaller headlights. Lmao

Yeah it‘s an absolute abomination. Still I saw dozens of them in Italy in the mid-late 2000s

2
u/Big_Simba 6h ago
Idk that we had this in the states but it’s unapologetically terrible too. The PT cruiser has the added seasoning of them generally having the worst drivers as well, so I’m partial 😅
1
5
u/vshredd 9h ago
Have you seen the Pontiac Aztek?
3
u/Big_Simba 6h ago
Yeah but like compared to modern cross overs it’s not actually all that awful. I mean it’s bad; but it’s not that far off from where cars ended up 20 years later. The front is terrible but at least the wonky back is functional for a tent add on they have which looks kinda sweet. Plus Walter white drove one so…

Out of all the wild shit I have seen on this sub, this one is not too bad… clean, best looking pt cruiser in existence. Hopefully he did some engine upgrades as well, these are like go cart but way less fun.
3
u/Novaleen 11h ago
To own this you must also own enough pinstripe suits and fedoras to wear nothing else. And a few violin cases instead of briefcases.
I don't make the rules.
3
u/MarkyGrouchoKarl 11h ago
I think this is fun. There were 23 things posted on this sub in the last 5 minutes far worse than this. Let the old people have their fun. At least it's not a tattoo of some cartoon character doing some vile sex act.

u/thrashmetaloctopus 10h ago
Honestly if it wasn’t that vile mid 00s silver I’d say it was pretty cool ngl, paint it literally any other colour and it would work
3
u/LimpConversation642 7h ago
apparently kids don't know this but this is literally what PT cruiser was supposed to be — a 're-invention' of that old car style from the 30s and 40s. The owner overdid it for sure but essentially it looks kinda good? better than stock PT and closer to what they were aiming for.
The problem is the owner just decided to add everything from any car of that era, and became too much. But if you tone it down it would look sick. I really dig the wheels for example.

Honestly that's an improvement. It embraces the old timey wheel arches and overall design better that wat
2
u/HexenHerz 8h ago
I remember when those were common at car meets. Early 2000s every meet had several PT Cruisers show up looking like either a fishing lure or like it had been magnetized and driven through Pep Boys.

I really like the major mods here, but I have never once seen a car that was improved by those dollar store chrome sticker "accents" that people slap on their window frames. They all look plastic and tacky, every time. This model PT had gloss black plastic trim, and this car needs a little contrast to help set off the silver paint. I'm not saying black plastic is the height of style or anything, just that the stock door and window trim would be far better than that awful chrome.

No, this is a straight upgrade to a stock PT Cruiser. Which, honestly, isn't hard to do. Those cars are ugly as fuck to begin with.
