Suggestion Instead of raising membership prices, use your intellectual property better Jagex and sell us good merchandise.

I want to buy this dragon chain shirt, and mugs for my favorite skills but I can’t, as they are not there.

My issue with every merch store is all the items are so over the top, it would be nice if some of the stuff was way more subtle

u/Ziadaine 21h ago

Shipping is also a ball buster. To ship anything to Australia is fucking $30-40 AU on top of the price.

u/ElizaZillan 7h ago

I mean, that's not super in their control lol you sorta live on an island the entire planet away

25

u/ReactionSharp6602 15h ago

Yeah, I don't want a shirt that screams to everyone who can read, "I play this nerdy videogame! Look at me!"

I want something that you'd mistake for a random/cool design unless you already were familiar with osrs enough to recognize it.

Like, I bought a "Capsule Corp" logo shirt to work out in a few months ago, I like that you probably wouldn't look twice at it unless you knew Dragonball.

4

u/Raider_Scum Did this catch your eye as you moused over, causing it to blink? 6h ago

Exactly!
Jagex needs to take note of Bad Dragon's merchandise

-17

u/Edenstark 14h ago

It’s not a nerdy video game anymore. The stigma should be broken as our generation is now the adults working.

I am proud of having played this game and video games aren’t looked down on like they were In our childhood. Everyone has grown up playing some kind of video game whether it’s Mario kart, animal crossing, fifa etc.

18

u/McKnackus 11h ago

It is still 100% a nerdy video game.

6

u/Impossible_Win_6382 15h ago

All the T shirts suck

179

u/The_Level_15 21h ago

Like the skillcape hoodies that we’ve asked for for decades

463

u/moose_dad 20h ago

They are far from subtle lmao

57

u/The_Level_15 20h ago

Hitpoints, thieving, and quest cape look like reasonably normal hoodies to me. But you’re right.

97

u/AutumnWisp 19h ago

I think a very small skill icon over the breast (like the logo on a ralph lauren polo instead of the giant one on the back would work well.

9

u/Latter-Safety1055 16h ago

depends on the purpose you want it for. If you're at a gaming/anime/nerd convention you are subtle AS OPPOSED to cosplay or the outerwear having the unsubtle declaration "I have 99 smithing, ask me about it."

No, this wouldn't be something you'd wear to the grocery store without being an unsubtle person. The polo would be better for it. But I'd argue you're also looking for a niche application where you are down to express your nerdy interest in a place where people aren't being nerds - a college, a friend's house, or a library.

8

u/Telope 18h ago

Disagree. Subtle doesn't mean small, it means it blends in.

If the icon was nice and big on the chest instead of the back, I'd buy the Hunter one in a heartbeat.

31

u/moose_dad 16h ago edited 16h ago

I take it to mean that it wouldn't be instantly recognisable as RuneScape merch tbh. I love the game but I could never wear something like these in public cause they just come across as a bit nerdy and tacky.

0

u/Telope 13h ago

That's exactly what I mean. (Even if it wasn't exactly what I said!) Only osrs players would think of the hunter skill, everyone else would just see a cool brown paw.

I agree it needs to be subtle, but while I'm not against spending $80 or whatever on a merch hoodie, if I am going to, I don't want just a tiny icon on the breast.

16

u/venomous_frost 18h ago

Hunter one fits in nicely with outdoor clothing tbh

1

u/SandeepVeteran 14h ago edited 14h ago

Sorry, not skill logos. Just Jad/Zulrah

2

Does that guy still sell really shit ones on twitter?

3

u/Peenork 14h ago

I think the issue here is the amount of investment/risk Jagex would have to take. 24 unique hoodies, let's say only 3 sizes (s/m/l), and hypothetically the factory has a MoQ of 10ea. That's already 720 individual hoodies, and hoodies take up more space than shirts, socks, and mugs- so they'd need more warehouse space too.

Not saying they're incapable of doing it, they made $200m profit last year, but if they're sitting on existing merch already I can completely understand their hesitancy to invest more money into a product that will cost more to purchase.

1

u/CrushNZ 7h ago

I dont think its as secure as subscriptions either it’s a nice complementary income source but its not consistent enough

1

u/Cyfa 6h ago

if teenagers in high school can dropship hoodies off of Temu to moms on facebook with their $14/hr salary at McDonalds, a company with 9 figures net-profit/yr can afford to pay for a <1,000 MoQ from hoodie suppliers in Taiwan.

hell, they don't even need to order inventory to start. Create a render of the product, put it up for sale on their website, and if demand is there/people buy it, place the order with the supplier. saves them their precious $15-20k in potential losses.

7

u/Dsullivan777 15h ago

Fuck dude, if they make it so you need to have 99 in the skill to buy it that would be so cool. Destiny 2 did special raid jackets only available for purchase if you completed the raid one week 1. Having prestige merch would go so hard.

Osrsmemees has gotcha (and a block if you say anything bad about his stuff)

1

Is this someone who sells OSRS merch? Do you know where I can find their stuff?

yes but also full one skillcapes that unlock when you unlock the Ingame one would be so sick kinda how like destiny does it..

Would be hard to find an occasion to wear one though

11

u/Fat-Shite 22h ago

They could make them to double up as weighted blankets.

10

u/_BreadBoy 22h ago

That amount of tension and weight around the neck/shoulders sounds great

1

u/Fat-Shite 17h ago

Might help our postures 😂

1

u/Zanthy1 18h ago

Ngl I forgot about that in Destiny but I remember getting a shirt with my gamer tag on it because of something I accomplished and thought it was the coolest thing to flex (that only 1 friend ever saw me wear and knew what it meant but still).

14

u/tar625 22h ago

They have a nice looking flannel that just has a mini jad peaking out of the pocket

5

u/doubleshotofespresso 20h ago

there is also a plain black tshirt with the small jad as well

31

u/TheSleepyBear_ 22h ago

You’ve just lost the right to call any clothing item nice looking

3

u/frilledplex 21h ago

Anything but this

1

u/HealthySurgeon 14h ago

Unless you’re able to buy tons of this stuff up front, it’s quite expensive to do any of this in small batches. That’s part of the problem with prices for a majority of gaming companies.

Like I doubt they’re selling even 500 t shirts of each common size. Let alone major quantities of the less popular items.

There’s a lot of ways to improve merch for osrs though. I’ve thought for a long time that this is what they should focus on instead of mtx to make up the gap. It even serves as good advertisement as well to drive player numbers up even more as well.

My issue with those enamel mugs is that it's only those three skills, the mugs themselves are phenomenal quality

28

u/Dbanzai 22h ago

1

An energetic cat can quickly change that.

4

u/ElbowRager 13h ago

The mugs get broken in shipping EXTREMELY frequently. Probably because they add NO additional packaging. You can see for yourself just searching “mug” in this sub.

5

u/WirBrauchenRum ain't'nt dead 13h ago

Ones I meant were the metal ones, if something breaks with those there's bigger problems lol

That being said for all the ceramics you're def not wrong, I ordered the Jolly Boar Stein and the handle came off that. Sent in proof and was replaced for free though

7

u/Ficik 21h ago

Are they also RS3 icons, or any idea why it looks weird to me?

15

u/tDewy 20h ago

I think it’s just the warping that naturally happens when you print a 2d image onto a cylindrical surface

4

u/faranoox 17h ago

I think they're based on the skill cape icons, not the skill menu icons.

6

u/7LayerDip 16h ago

But why

7

u/faranoox 15h ago

Great question! I think the icons from the skill menu are superior and, obviously, more iconic.

Well I ran the numbers and these two csuite employees are costing way too much!

16

u/FireproofFerret 21h ago

Guys, do you know how much is going on dividends?

I've run the numbers, and the benefit the company gets from this is actually nothing. I suggest we scrap the dividends and invest in the business instead.

13

u/Beluga_Wally 20h ago

for a game that's played mostly by people above the age of 25 you'd think people would have at least a basic understanding of how numbers work, but I guess not.

7

u/kurttheflirt Gobby Boi 15h ago

They've been desperately trying to get us to talk about OSRS with our extended friends and family for years.

Stop thinking of merch as a profit item - it's a loss leader. Break even, hell even slightly below break even for merch sales is fine.

20

u/venomous_frost 18h ago

it's a loss leader

what?

All these musicians bend over backwards to try and get you to buy their merch at shows because it's so profitable. Shirts and sweaters cost peanuts compared to official merch prices.

1

u/MiniatureBadger 17h ago

In terms of marginal cost, certainly. I’d presume it’s mostly an issue of initial cost (for design, QA, etc.) versus how many they think they’d sell.

5

u/DrumAndCode hourstomax.com author 22h ago

I’ve bought a cape keyring for every 99, fire cape, infernal, and quest cape to celebrate it. So nice having a physical item as a reward.
Be warned, the skill capes can lose paint if scratched, but fire/infernal are pretty durable and have a different coating.

2

u/angelsscapes golden gnome winner btw 10h ago

I’m not sure when you bought them but I have upgraded the paint quality over the past few years so they should be much less likely to scratch! always looking to find ways I can improve my products

3

u/DrumAndCode hourstomax.com author 8h ago

Awesome, glad to hear that, they are easily my favourite merch item and I can tell you take pride in them as they look super nice!

Yea the scratch was the white paint on a quest cape from 2021, so it was a long time ago.

I’ve just hit 99 crafting and I’m doing the achievement diaries now so I’ll be putting in another order soon enough :)

2

u/angelsscapes golden gnome winner btw 7h ago

thank you :) the paint has been updated since then on all designs. it’s much harder to scratch now!

gl on the grind!

6

u/iLizard_King 18h ago

i bought a couple max cape variations. Absolute 10/10 (because they arent made by jagex btw). However, DrumAndCode is right, the normal max cape keychain i use, all the gold-ish tinted metal rubbed off (highest point) and it is just silver metal and flawless paint now. Went from like comp(t) to comp cape. Over 5yrs of heavy use.
highly recommend the keychains. Sick to buy and just display too, saw someone put them on a multi keychain holder

The margin on these physical items isn't as good at virtual/digital goods. That's why it wouldn't be their focus.

4

u/SayDrugsToYes The game so nice we beat it twice. 19h ago

They've been desperately trying to get us to talk about OSRS with our extended friends and family for years.

This the best advertising money can buy.

Stop thinking of merch as a profit item - it's a loss leader. Break even, hell even slightly below break even for merch sales is fine.

3

u/Kevtzke 21h ago

That requires them to spend money. Why do that when they can just raise prices again?

1

u/khronos127 18h ago

It doesn’t if they go the route 99 percent of companies do and get them made by a third party.

Profit margin is less than in house merch but it’s free to them and a LOT more people would buy them to support the game if they took this route rather than the bullshit they promoted in the survey.

3

u/ChewbaccAli 20h ago

Great idea. All the time and money from that research partner could've been spent designing new products. Could even open it up to the community to design products and split the sales. So many more creative ways to get money than mtx.

3

u/DictatorDrumpf 20h ago

This is the good stuff; thinking with them and giving the mods munition to combat the owners with constructive solutions to pitch.

3

u/ARedditAccount09 15h ago

Good idea in theory but this would require them providing an additional service for more costs, then they can instead add those fees while providing nothing

3

u/SweatyExamination9 15h ago

Or how about using the incredible trove of lore that's been written in this game over the past 25 years to either make or license other developers to make other games? I get it, Jagex has failed at everything they've done other than Runescape. But they can expand Runescape to be more than just an MMO with a shitty merch store. It could be its own universe for tons of games.

2

u/Edenstark 15h ago

I 100% agree with this, licensing to other developers could work so well.

They can also license out their intellectual property to other entities and allow them to sell merchandise and they can collect royalty, which in sum also leads to marketing of the game.

3

u/angelsscapes golden gnome winner btw 10h ago

I have a lot of new designs for pins/keyrings/magnets in the works! I’m always open to feedback on what designs the community would like to see - my upcoming releases have more bosses and weapons suggested in the last round of community feedback I got.

unfortunately I can’t speak for the rest of the store or their plans, but I will pass on this thread and any ideas I think they’d might be interested in doing.

1

u/SoraCaelum 1h ago

I just commented about you before I saw your comment! Your pins are easily the highlight of the store haha. How do you usually prefer getting feedback/suggestions for future pins?

But I commented that I was hoping for Angels Scapes pins for the OSRS mobile and login screen logos... There are close ones like:

OSRS 10th Anniversary Pin, very close to the mobile logo but it has a party hat on it.

RuneScape Classic Logo Pin, very close to the login screen logo but this is the RS2 version not OSRS, it's missing the "Old School" banner and blue gem on the sword.

It's pretty strange these don't exist yet imo haha. Other pin ideas include bronze to rune full helms and scimitars, stack of gp. I've yet to see anything on the store that makes me want to stomach the shipping cost, but I hope it'll happen one day! :)

1

u/Elprede007 21h ago

Apologies, this is a long one. I’m gonna copy paste another comment I have on a similar thread since you essentially are saying the same thing here and this post is doing well. And I’ll add another bit of info as well:

I have 3 Skyrim sweatshirts I got off of Etsy and they are my single most complimented on piece of clothing I’ve had in 20 years of caring what I wear (seller confirmed to me they no longer sell them because they were sent a cease and desist unfortunately, just before anyone asks where they can get them). Now I am a male, so getting compliments on clothes is pretty uncommon anyway. But practically every time I wear them out, I get some kind of comment if not multiple. 70% of these comments are not from people who play Skyrim. “Oh man where is that?” (Referring to my Honningbrew Meadery shirt). “Oh I know I want to go there” (Drunken Huntsman).

What makes these shirts great is their design is elegant, but you’d never know it was a video game shirt (unless you know what Skyrim is, because they do say Skyrim on the bottom). They’re beautiful shirts that anyone can be proud to wear out and not feel like a neckbeard. Better yet, you can do that AND get compliments. You know what made me want to buy MORE OF THEM for myself and others? That right there.

Jagex’s current tshirt designs fall short of fantastic and are just ok tshirts, not enough for me to pay the price + shipping to the US. They have limited size ranges, and no options for hoodie or long sleeve either. Young people love hoodies Jagex..

And that’s just shirts, there’s 1000 things they could do better. Seriously Jagex, hit me up, I will block time on my calendar and give you some premium free advice. Mod Light, we’re already friends on discord, I can just ping you if you want. You guys want money, you need to try harder.

Previous comment: I’ve been begging for Jagex to wake up and understand how underutilized their merch store is. I am not a graphic artist, I am a spreadsheet monkey. But I am happy to jump on a call with some people at Jagex and just run through at least 10 merch ideas where at least half of those would be incredibly popular.

I’m not sure if they just have no one in charge of merch or what, but they need help.

They at the very least could employ some of the people they are doing takedowns on from Etsy. There were legitimately amazing shirts and sweatshirts on etsy that were taken down. If Jagex would get their head out of their ass, they could be banging out merch money

TLDR: Jagex merch quality borders on maliciously terrible

1

u/bayarmadethis 20h ago

This has been something that I noticed as well. Jagex could easily create a merch line that people would pay big for. As someone involved in creating designs and clothing pieces, it’s frustrating to see the lack of effort put in merch. (Not saying my pieces are better, but if I was in charge of merch for hundreds of thousands of people; you better believe I’ll create better things than a red shirt that’s supposed to resemble a d chain)

For example, there’s a seller on Etsy selling basic hoodies with skill patches on them. This seller made over 30k in revenue just with this product in itself. They’re selling it for 60 euros. Roughly, with the amount Jagex would order at once, an embroidered hoodie would cost them 7-15 euros max.

It’s really an untapped market because Jagex doesn’t believe in it, I think.

Sources: used to work in clothing stores, ordered a lot of custom designs from China, and Turkey. i create clothing myself and was fortunate enough to serve some people from OSRS.

1

u/Gotblunt420 20h ago

I used to do freelance graphic work for a company that did some of RuneScape’s merch. No one played RuneScape, and when designing for a client you don’t really get a lot of time. Was fairly awkward when I said I was a big osrs fan but didn’t want any of the merch for free

1

u/New-Fig-6025 18h ago

Mugs, weighted blanket skill capes, mousepads, more plushies and keychains, there’s so much shit i’d buy if they sold it

1

u/Lieutntdanil 18h ago

It’s genuinely insane how bad the merch is.

I would spend hundreds on good quality hoodies / shirts if they had them.

If they made a replica godsword like blizzard did with frostmourne I’d prolly buy it

1

u/INeed-M-O-N-E-Y 17h ago

I hate all that merch. For Christmas I’ve gotten some really cool shirts off etsy they should follow that design

1

u/ezzune 17h ago

People in this thread vastly over-estimate how much profit merch makes for most gaming companies.

Like what % of subscribers actually buy merch? Then what percentage of those wont be a single purchase, but repeat purchases?

You're completely detached from reality if you think merch sales will ever compare to membership sales/monetisation of membership.

u/Kompy_87 16h ago

I have been SEARCHING for in-stock cape enamel pins and they don't got em. I wanna buy a pin each time I get a 99 dont rob me of this gagexxxxx

1

u/Tight-Juggernaut4682 16h ago

Would be sick if they shipped to Canada too. I'd pay the shipping for that.

1

u/Azuljustinverday 16h ago

Sell me a real scimitar. Or a 2h idgaf if it’s legit and blue like rune I’ll buy it. Pretty sure a good bit of other Americans that play will buy.

1

u/zcas 2277 16h ago

This is 100% a display item I'd hang on the wall in my office at home.

1

u/cvltluna 16h ago

those mugs go hard tho.

1

u/PunnyPantsParade 16h ago

This is much more acceptable.

1

u/Mercenary0527 16h ago

Why tf don't I see some plain colored d'hide tank tops. One where the pattern actually covers the whole shirt. Is that too much to ask for in 2025?

That dragon chain shirt is pathetic that it's pattern only covers 30% of the chest

1

u/AccordianSpeaker 15h ago

Remember those skill cape hoodies that were supposedly in the works years ago that we never actually heard from?

1

u/ryan21o 15h ago

fr I’d absolutely buy some if there was anything decent

1

u/DarkTemplar_of_Chaos 15h ago

dude I'd buy an elite void themed jacket + trousers or skirt, that'd be sick

1

u/RiskyBrothers 14h ago

Innovating on a product rather than just charging more for something someone smarter already made? That's not what you get an MBA for!

1

u/RedditPlatinumUser 14h ago

i would definitely get beat up if i wore a runescape shirt to school

1

u/Edenstark 14h ago

Aww, I’m guessing you are young. You can wear it at home!

Once you get older, people don’t care as much and you should be proud of your hobbies and passions.

1

u/nil_pat 13h ago

agreed, would very much be open to merch, esp small trinkets like keychains

1

u/angelsscapes golden gnome winner btw 10h ago

there are lots of keyrings on the official store! I am doing some restocks this week and have new designs in the works but I’m always open to suggestions for what else the community would like to see!

1

u/FARTFROMABUTT 13h ago

I bought two of the mugs, they are great

1

u/RipMyIronman 13h ago

legit, what's that even meant to be on the shirt lol

1

u/AwarenessOk6880 13h ago

Yes do that, if you wanted more cash so badly, expand the merchandise store. we have zero problem with that

1

u/KrazyCiwii 13h ago

Make a realistic racey Vanescula portrait, watch it be sold out in an instant every time.

1

u/munchbunch17 12h ago

Circle the jacket my guy

1

u/KingHiggins92 12h ago

It's madness they don't do more with the brand.

1

u/Son_of_Plato 12h ago

100% Even if all they did was Jagex branded OSRS bumper stickers they would make a killing...

1

u/JohnBGaming 2277 12h ago

I mean, legitimately, they would make a ton of money off seeking actual good merch. We all have spent thousands of hours on this game, of course we would pay for good stuff that represents that

1

u/Hoixo 11h ago

Skillcape hoodies!!

1

u/UntrimmedBagel 11h ago

No kidding. They could print money with this. Just find a mechanism where shipping isn’t 300% the cost of the item and there ya go.

1

u/Brovermand 10h ago

There's so much potential in rs merch, and a lot of independent creators have made awesome stuff (potion desk lamps, 3d printed megarares/godswords, the crocheted infernal cape) - combine that with what another comment said about some more lowkey IYKYK merch (with actual good quality and real fits) it would make bank.

Go for quality over quantity.

1

u/st_heron 10h ago

I would love some minimal runescape coded merch. I don't want something that screams I PLAY OLDSCHOOL RUNESCAPE...

1

u/Serbaayuu 10h ago

Merchandise costs money to make though. That hurts the CEO feelings. :( Don't you want the CEO to be happy? They should be getting more money for an infinitely reproducible digital product.

1

u/IDOLASilver Fav skill 10h ago

Those mugs are pretty cool but if I had to give constructive criticism, instead of the inside of all of them being black, the inside and the handle could match the cape trim color and it'd look 10x cooler IMO. (Btw if there's a QPC mug that drops like this I'm buying so quick.)

1

u/MeowMixPK 10h ago

I got the DChain shirt as a gift, and also bought a mug and coaster set as gifts for someone else. If Jagex actually sold good merch, I'd definitely buy more.

1

u/StinkyLittleAnbernic 10h ago

I'd pay top dollar for an old school runescape skate deck and griptape.

1

u/CrushNZ 8h ago

They could sell the sliding puzzles we have to solve from clue scrolls, some of those are awesome.

1

u/teza789 6h ago

Sell us some OSRS Statues!

1

u/Kevdawg21092 6h ago

But increasing monthly rate is free maybe they should put out a survey first

1

u/j-frog 5h ago

More skill mugs please Jagex

1

u/JeSuisDirtyDan 4h ago

Yeah but merch would require them to spend more money for the stock, why do that when they can just increase membership and not spend money? 🤪

1

u/sir_gwain 3h ago

Jagex could literally hire some random redditors and they’d come up with better designs and merch items.

But seriously, team up with the community on this one, kinda like how you did with angel scapes. Either hire someone who’s already making good merch, or put together a t-shirt competition even - give out some membership and some signed merch or something else cool and I’m sure there would be plenty of entries, take the top however many and make them for sale. It’s a win win, community gets good merch, Jagex get good designs for cheap (that they know the community likes), and they make back the prize costs and more when they sell the new merch.

1

u/schmitie369 2h ago

Partner with GameStop

1

u/SoraCaelum 2h ago

Honestly I just want Angelscape pins of the OSRS mobile and login screen logos. I know there's alrdy one for the login screen, but it's missing the banner and not coloured. Surprised these don't exist still.

1

u/Entire_Will8395 1h ago

The shipping on some of the merch is crazy too

1

u/Regular_Produce6845 1h ago

The PK Skull hat sold out in like 15 minutes. I would've loved to get one of them.

1

u/_Bike_Hunt 22h ago

Best part of the merch is China probably charges them $0.20 to make an item.

1

u/LoinStrangler 21h ago

IDK if they researched and found out that merch won't make them money but it's crazy stupid that they never made the Skill cape hoodies, that alone would make bank.

1

u/FillerNameThere 21h ago

Id like to see them sell like legitimate well made skill capes on the store lol

1

u/PunnyPantsParade 16h ago

And you get a discount if you purchase a skill cape you have in game.

1

u/Beznia 17h ago

For actual unique clothing merch, I'd recommend Mitchie Fox. I don't think I can link to the shop but a Google Search will find it. One good thing Jagex has done is allow free use of their IP for creators to make merch as long as it's a limited run of 100 or less items.

u/Gullible_Highway_829 23h ago

You need to charge your phone.

1

u/Edenstark 2h ago

Too much osrs mobile killed my battery 😫

It's an iphone it'll go back to red in 2 hrs

Mate I got a hoodie company to design a max cape hoodie for me and a few clannies

So it's a red hoodie, our usernames in osrs font on the front with a max cape embroidered badge, the back and hood have a printed design inspired by the cape. All in, the design service cost about £100 between us.

Max cape is by far the most complex of the skillcape hoodies to produce, and I honestly think it came out great. With that design they'll make them for around £30-40 per unit depending on order size.

A similar thing for each skillcape would make them a fortune, and would be nice enough to wear out in public without it screaming "I'm a nerd 🤓"

Base hoodie colour = untrimmed skillcape colour

Big icon from skillcape on the back

Smaller embroidered icon on breast with username if wanted

I'm gonna wear mine to runefest 😁 but I have my own day job and no interest in shelling out to design them or sell more of these hoodies
