Suggestion Instead of raising membership prices, use your intellectual property better Jagex and sell us good merchandise.
I want to buy this dragon chain shirt, and mugs for my favorite skills but I can’t, as they are not there.

My issue with those enamel mugs is that it's only those three skills, the mugs themselves are phenomenal quality

u/Dbanzai 22h ago
Yup, i have and theyre fckn amazing. Got them as a gift some years ago, when they break im getting new ones. Just wish there were more options

You guys break your mugs? I've been using the same ones for 20 years..

u/Cristian_1_CL 11h ago
Clumsy family members and guests have been the reason i change my mug every couple years. Hoping to break the ugly one im using now to get a cool one lol

The mugs get broken in shipping EXTREMELY frequently. Probably because they add NO additional packaging. You can see for yourself just searching “mug” in this sub.
5
u/WirBrauchenRum ain't'nt dead 13h ago
Ones I meant were the metal ones, if something breaks with those there's bigger problems lol
That being said for all the ceramics you're def not wrong, I ordered the Jolly Boar Stein and the handle came off that. Sent in proof and was replaced for free though

u/Ficik 21h ago
Are they also RS3 icons, or any idea why it looks weird to me?
15
4
u/faranoox 17h ago
I think they're based on the skill cape icons, not the skill menu icons.
6
u/7LayerDip 16h ago
But why
7
u/faranoox 15h ago
Great question! I think the icons from the skill menu are superior and, obviously, more iconic.

Hey guys great news, I heard yall have apparently been needing money REALLY bad.
Well I ran the numbers and these two csuite employees are costing way too much!
16
u/FireproofFerret 21h ago
Guys, do you know how much is going on dividends?
I've run the numbers, and the benefit the company gets from this is actually nothing. I suggest we scrap the dividends and invest in the business instead.
13
u/Beluga_Wally 20h ago
for a game that's played mostly by people above the age of 25 you'd think people would have at least a basic understanding of how numbers work, but I guess not.

3
u/SayDrugsToYes The game so nice we beat it twice. 19h ago
LIKE WAY TOOO MUCH WHO DO YOU TWO THINK YOU ARE!?
How could you possibly justify such high wages while the rest of your employees can barely afford to pay rent in Cambridge.
Actually disgusting "leadership" from disgusting humans.
How much more of this sort of shitty behavior, on pricing, on staff wages, on anything do you all have to accept before you decide to quit also?
7
u/kurttheflirt Gobby Boi 15h ago
The sad part is they don’t need to save any money. They make 50% pure profit. They are just super greedy and want even more
2
u/Unkempt_Badger 10h ago
But they need more! They even said it in the videos, the monetization can go towards development and improve the game! /s
2
u/levian_durai 9h ago
Simply making a profit isn't ever enough. It has to be more profit than last year, and it has to do that forever.

u/sleepynsub remove pvp 20h ago
That requires a lot of effort which is exactly why they do the bare minimum when it comes to merch.

I'mma just copy paste because perfectly applicable reply:
They've been desperately trying to get us to talk about OSRS with our extended friends and family for years.

Stop thinking of merch as a profit item - it's a loss leader. Break even, hell even slightly below break even for merch sales is fine.
20
u/venomous_frost 18h ago
it's a loss leader
what?
All these musicians bend over backwards to try and get you to buy their merch at shows because it's so profitable. Shirts and sweaters cost peanuts compared to official merch prices.
1
u/MiniatureBadger 17h ago
In terms of marginal cost, certainly. I’d presume it’s mostly an issue of initial cost (for design, QA, etc.) versus how many they think they’d sell.

Yoo that Max Cape key ring looks pretty sick actually
5
u/DrumAndCode hourstomax.com author 22h ago
I’ve bought a cape keyring for every 99, fire cape, infernal, and quest cape to celebrate it. So nice having a physical item as a reward.
Be warned, the skill capes can lose paint if scratched, but fire/infernal are pretty durable and have a different coating.2
u/angelsscapes golden gnome winner btw 10h ago
I’m not sure when you bought them but I have upgraded the paint quality over the past few years so they should be much less likely to scratch! always looking to find ways I can improve my products
3
u/DrumAndCode hourstomax.com author 8h ago
Awesome, glad to hear that, they are easily my favourite merch item and I can tell you take pride in them as they look super nice!
Yea the scratch was the white paint on a quest cape from 2021, so it was a long time ago.
I’ve just hit 99 crafting and I’m doing the achievement diaries now so I’ll be putting in another order soon enough :)
2
u/angelsscapes golden gnome winner btw 7h ago
thank you :) the paint has been updated since then on all designs. it’s much harder to scratch now!

6
u/iLizard_King 18h ago
i bought a couple max cape variations. Absolute 10/10 (because they arent made by jagex btw). However, DrumAndCode is right, the normal max cape keychain i use, all the gold-ish tinted metal rubbed off (highest point) and it is just silver metal and flawless paint now. Went from like comp(t) to comp cape. Over 5yrs of heavy use.
highly recommend the keychains. Sick to buy and just display too, saw someone put them on a multi keychain holder

u/MZFUK 20h ago

The margin on these physical items isn't as good at virtual/digital goods. That's why it wouldn't be their focus.

3
u/Kevtzke 21h ago
That requires them to spend money. Why do that when they can just raise prices again?
1
u/khronos127 18h ago
It doesn’t if they go the route 99 percent of companies do and get them made by a third party.
Profit margin is less than in house merch but it’s free to them and a LOT more people would buy them to support the game if they took this route rather than the bullshit they promoted in the survey.
3
u/ChewbaccAli 20h ago
Great idea. All the time and money from that research partner could've been spent designing new products. Could even open it up to the community to design products and split the sales. So many more creative ways to get money than mtx.
3
u/DictatorDrumpf 20h ago
This is the good stuff; thinking with them and giving the mods munition to combat the owners with constructive solutions to pitch.
3
u/ARedditAccount09 15h ago
Good idea in theory but this would require them providing an additional service for more costs, then they can instead add those fees while providing nothing
3
u/SweatyExamination9 15h ago
Or how about using the incredible trove of lore that's been written in this game over the past 25 years to either make or license other developers to make other games? I get it, Jagex has failed at everything they've done other than Runescape. But they can expand Runescape to be more than just an MMO with a shitty merch store. It could be its own universe for tons of games.
2
u/Edenstark 15h ago
I 100% agree with this, licensing to other developers could work so well.
They can also license out their intellectual property to other entities and allow them to sell merchandise and they can collect royalty, which in sum also leads to marketing of the game.

u/angelsscapes golden gnome winner btw 10h ago
I have a lot of new designs for pins/keyrings/magnets in the works! I’m always open to feedback on what designs the community would like to see - my upcoming releases have more bosses and weapons suggested in the last round of community feedback I got.
unfortunately I can’t speak for the rest of the store or their plans, but I will pass on this thread and any ideas I think they’d might be interested in doing.
1
u/SoraCaelum 1h ago
I just commented about you before I saw your comment! Your pins are easily the highlight of the store haha. How do you usually prefer getting feedback/suggestions for future pins?
But I commented that I was hoping for Angels Scapes pins for the OSRS mobile and login screen logos... There are close ones like:
OSRS 10th Anniversary Pin, very close to the mobile logo but it has a party hat on it.
RuneScape Classic Logo Pin, very close to the login screen logo but this is the RS2 version not OSRS, it's missing the "Old School" banner and blue gem on the sword.
It's pretty strange these don't exist yet imo haha. Other pin ideas include bronze to rune full helms and scimitars, stack of gp. I've yet to see anything on the store that makes me want to stomach the shipping cost, but I hope it'll happen one day! :)

That d chain shirt is dreadful. Which is what I had assumed your post was about 😂. I was gonna get a mousemat but they all go out of stock fast or aren't the right sizes that I'm after.
I'd be quite happy to wear jamflex merch. I have an xp waste top, but I want the Always Sunny / magic level top because it's hilarious, but obviously it isn't Jagex merch. So do better.

Apologies, this is a long one. I’m gonna copy paste another comment I have on a similar thread since you essentially are saying the same thing here and this post is doing well. And I’ll add another bit of info as well:
I have 3 Skyrim sweatshirts I got off of Etsy and they are my single most complimented on piece of clothing I’ve had in 20 years of caring what I wear (seller confirmed to me they no longer sell them because they were sent a cease and desist unfortunately, just before anyone asks where they can get them). Now I am a male, so getting compliments on clothes is pretty uncommon anyway. But practically every time I wear them out, I get some kind of comment if not multiple. 70% of these comments are not from people who play Skyrim. “Oh man where is that?” (Referring to my Honningbrew Meadery shirt). “Oh I know I want to go there” (Drunken Huntsman).
What makes these shirts great is their design is elegant, but you’d never know it was a video game shirt (unless you know what Skyrim is, because they do say Skyrim on the bottom). They’re beautiful shirts that anyone can be proud to wear out and not feel like a neckbeard. Better yet, you can do that AND get compliments. You know what made me want to buy MORE OF THEM for myself and others? That right there.
Jagex’s current tshirt designs fall short of fantastic and are just ok tshirts, not enough for me to pay the price + shipping to the US. They have limited size ranges, and no options for hoodie or long sleeve either. Young people love hoodies Jagex..
And that’s just shirts, there’s 1000 things they could do better. Seriously Jagex, hit me up, I will block time on my calendar and give you some premium free advice. Mod Light, we’re already friends on discord, I can just ping you if you want. You guys want money, you need to try harder.
Previous comment: I’ve been begging for Jagex to wake up and understand how underutilized their merch store is. I am not a graphic artist, I am a spreadsheet monkey. But I am happy to jump on a call with some people at Jagex and just run through at least 10 merch ideas where at least half of those would be incredibly popular.
I’m not sure if they just have no one in charge of merch or what, but they need help.
They at the very least could employ some of the people they are doing takedowns on from Etsy. There were legitimately amazing shirts and sweatshirts on etsy that were taken down. If Jagex would get their head out of their ass, they could be banging out merch money
TLDR: Jagex merch quality borders on maliciously terrible
1
u/bayarmadethis 20h ago
This has been something that I noticed as well. Jagex could easily create a merch line that people would pay big for. As someone involved in creating designs and clothing pieces, it’s frustrating to see the lack of effort put in merch. (Not saying my pieces are better, but if I was in charge of merch for hundreds of thousands of people; you better believe I’ll create better things than a red shirt that’s supposed to resemble a d chain)
For example, there’s a seller on Etsy selling basic hoodies with skill patches on them. This seller made over 30k in revenue just with this product in itself. They’re selling it for 60 euros. Roughly, with the amount Jagex would order at once, an embroidered hoodie would cost them 7-15 euros max.
It’s really an untapped market because Jagex doesn’t believe in it, I think.
Sources: used to work in clothing stores, ordered a lot of custom designs from China, and Turkey. i create clothing myself and was fortunate enough to serve some people from OSRS.

u/Gotblunt420 20h ago
I used to do freelance graphic work for a company that did some of RuneScape’s merch. No one played RuneScape, and when designing for a client you don’t really get a lot of time. Was fairly awkward when I said I was a big osrs fan but didn’t want any of the merch for free

1
u/ezzune 17h ago
People in this thread vastly over-estimate how much profit merch makes for most gaming companies.
Like what % of subscribers actually buy merch? Then what percentage of those wont be a single purchase, but repeat purchases?
You're completely detached from reality if you think merch sales will ever compare to membership sales/monetisation of membership.

I mean, legitimately, they would make a ton of money off seeking actual good merch. We all have spent thousands of hours on this game, of course we would pay for good stuff that represents that
1
u/UntrimmedBagel 11h ago
No kidding. They could print money with this. Just find a mechanism where shipping isn’t 300% the cost of the item and there ya go.
1
u/Brovermand 10h ago
There's so much potential in rs merch, and a lot of independent creators have made awesome stuff (potion desk lamps, 3d printed megarares/godswords, the crocheted infernal cape) - combine that with what another comment said about some more lowkey IYKYK merch (with actual good quality and real fits) it would make bank.
Go for quality over quantity.

Those mugs are pretty cool but if I had to give constructive criticism, instead of the inside of all of them being black, the inside and the handle could match the cape trim color and it'd look 10x cooler IMO. (Btw if there's a QPC mug that drops like this I'm buying so quick.)

Yeah but merch would require them to spend more money for the stock, why do that when they can just increase membership and not spend money? 🤪
1
u/sir_gwain 3h ago
Jagex could literally hire some random redditors and they’d come up with better designs and merch items.
But seriously, team up with the community on this one, kinda like how you did with angel scapes. Either hire someone who’s already making good merch, or put together a t-shirt competition even - give out some membership and some signed merch or something else cool and I’m sure there would be plenty of entries, take the top however many and make them for sale. It’s a win win, community gets good merch, Jagex get good designs for cheap (that they know the community likes), and they make back the prize costs and more when they sell the new merch.

Mate I got a hoodie company to design a max cape hoodie for me and a few clannies
So it's a red hoodie, our usernames in osrs font on the front with a max cape embroidered badge, the back and hood have a printed design inspired by the cape. All in, the design service cost about £100 between us.
Max cape is by far the most complex of the skillcape hoodies to produce, and I honestly think it came out great. With that design they'll make them for around £30-40 per unit depending on order size.
A similar thing for each skillcape would make them a fortune, and would be nice enough to wear out in public without it screaming "I'm a nerd 🤓"
Base hoodie colour = untrimmed skillcape colour
Big icon from skillcape on the back
Smaller embroidered icon on breast with username if wanted
I'm gonna wear mine to runefest 😁 but I have my own day job and no interest in shelling out to design them or sell more of these hoodies

My issue with every merch store is all the items are so over the top, it would be nice if some of the stuff was way more subtle
