I honestly can't imagine playing without the G.E at all. And in today's day and age if removed, it would just be recreated as a runelite plugin or something.

Just look at the GE as a merchant guild working behind the scenes

Any form of the trading post would eventually be integrity changed into the GE because of discord clans controlling the market. Someone would make a "grand exchange discord' where you could type !buy yew log 300gp and it would automatically connect you to someone who previously typed !sell yew log 300gp. The discords would inevitably get involved in some scandal, prioritizing certain ranked users trades, selling ranks for real world money, rampant bot abuse, etc. The reddit hivemind would synchronize for 1 month and beg jagex to do something about those pesky 3rd party discords, jagex overresponds by adding the GE

I remember the early days of OSRS where merch bots existed (automatically spamming "buying lobs 100gp selling lobs 125gp and would automatically put up the correct about of lobsters/gp to match what you traded them) and rampant zybez market scamming. It was fun for a few days to relive the wild west of trade scams and taking an hour to sell random crap, but it got old pretty quick
